For those of us who live in single houses in neighborhoods, its really not that different. In my prior house, I was literally about 15 feet away from my neighbor's patio. I didn't mind because we got along fine, but then again, we weren't forced to face each other. I would think it could be awkward staring at your neighbor while in your underwear drinking your morning coffee. I hate getting on a train or in a waiting room where the seats face each other for the same reason, especially if I am still in my underwear drinking coffee.
