They do connect inside. They moved all the office around and changed locations and layout of a few WAG galleries. I agree it is a bit odd though having two main entrances to what seems like one place.

I was in the area and stopped for a closer look... all I can say is WOW. To my layman's eye, the design and execution on the masonry is nothing short of amazing. It's the rare kind of building that looks even better in real life than it does in renderings and photos.

I don't know if there is a magazine out there devoted to bricks, but if there is, this building should be on the cover 100%. Maltzan and Alpha Masonry knocked it out of the park as far as I'm concerned.

So, colour me confused, and I'll admit to being ignorant on the topic, but should there be that kind of a line running down the middle of the exterior every time there's any precipitation?

For a museum to house a bunch of rocks (thanks Riverman) it looks pretty darn good!

^^^ That's probably where the intermediate horizontal support is behind the brick.

That means there is weep holes in the grout line immediately above that horizontal joint that allow any moisture that gets in the cavity behind the brick to drain away.

I could be way off - but I suspect that is what you are seeing there.

I think I have mentioned before that this type of stone(?) has never been used for this purpose in Winnipeg before. Hopefully it's up for the task.

That's going to be a permanent line, not just when wet. Will collect dust and debris and look like shit.

Otherwise it looks pretty cool.

This is why I'm here. I get to learn shit that I didn't know before.

Thanks.

God all those new street lights and traffic signal poles or horrendous. What an embarassment that our "Provincial Mall" looks like that. I hate it here sometimes.

Osborne St N is terrible. I'd love to see the street beautified a bit and see some nice development along the west side in between the gallery and Broadway (obviously). Walking along that stretch now is miserable.

That's not even getting to the Bay parkade...

This has always blown me away.

I laughed at this one. I know you were giving a compliment but how is this museum "housing a bunch of rocks" any better or worse that one housing a bunch of bones, or one housing some picture frames and canvas?

Yep, pretty much anything can be disparaged if you choose to reduce it to it's basic elements. People who post here are not much more than $600 in common chemicals and elements (and even that seems high to me). One could say their clothes are simply housing sacks of ....junk??

It would be nice to see a concerted effort to make it look better. Even just a long-term plan to guide planning decisions around there would be nice. Winnipeg will never be Paris but surely we could at least make those few blocks of Memorial look good and suitably grand. The new WAG building is a big improvement, but there is more that could be done:

-Fix the low hanging fruit like the light fixtures, street furniture and such. It wouldn't really take much, just make it look consistent, put up some nice banners (not just the hand-me downs from Ottawa), that kind of thing.

-Improve the northern side of the Legislative Building grounds. The south side got a nice touch-up for Manitoba 125 in 1995 and it still looks good today, but the main northern side is still kind of lame. The province redid the steps and built a ramp which is good, but the landscaping could be better. The grounds will never truly shine until they get rid of the parking but I don't expect that to happen in my lifetime.

-Vaughn Street Jail needs to be repurposed, but at least it's still there.

-This is out of the province's control, but The Bay Parkade is maybe the single biggest blemish on the mall... seeing a nice new building go up there would really improve the area's appearance.

It would be nice to eventually see some development on Osborne St. N. I don't think anything new has gone up along there since the GWL/Canada Life offices sometime in the early 80s.

I'm glad that at least Memorial Blvd. itself was fixed up... it was in such a shambolic state before that it was getting a little embarrassing.

^ there are a few missing teeth on Osborne N but nothing major. What it could really use is some shops and restaurants to liven it up. Kinda lacks that. And yeah Bay parkade is public enemy no. 1 in the vicinity

Planning a 3 storey mixed use on the empty lot York and Osborne (SW corner). This was previously envisioned as a 10 storey with no success. They went back to the drawing board with a more modest proposal, but one I think would work well and suit the area.

^ Yeah, it wouldn't take much. Bigger would be better but even a well designed 3 storey building would be great. Something to fill in the gaps and make it look a little less forlorn on that side.

I am working on a downtown mixed-use building and the street is getting a complete overhaul during construction. The street lights and signals are right on the property line and basically immovable, even with a completely rebuilt street. The building will also be built right to the property line along the sidewalk. The signal pole will run right up the middle of a huge window into the ground floor commercial space and the sidewalk canopy will have to have a gap in it. It's going to look terrible.
