Just heard on NPR a tower in NYC was causing massive amounts of traffic due to a dangling crane, had to check out the thread. Doesn't seem to be that bad.

Home on my lunch right now and it was on Fox News as a "alert" they said the whole street was closed. They said the 7 ton counter weight is dangling in the air after a crane malfunction.

Yes, the news certainly made it sound bad and it looks like the people who complained about One57 before are going to have a field day with this.

Was thinking the same. Just waiting to see the angry letters posted. These residents would complain against pigeon crap if they could.

Everything on Fox News is a Fox News alert.

Well, the image of that crane (not exactly that, but the other one in the very same site) was extensively shown world wide in the news and became one of the symbols of Sandy's aftermath. So if a crane in the same site is broken again, forcing traffic closures and evacuations it is automatic news.
And it is a potentially dangerous situation, I heard that today there's a high wind alert for the NY area, and that thing dangling there? hopeffullly nothing happens, but it is not a minor issue.
Finally, It may be just a case of extremely bad luck, but the neighbors has all the right to complain, It may be not the worst thing to happen, but it is certainly something that at the very least perturb their lives, being forced to evacuate their homes or bussinesses losing money. And it is something that they have suffered before, because of this very same site.

740 Park --------->

"Legendarily rigorous co-op board, presided over by hedge-funder Charles Stevenson Jr. (He’s married to New York Times writer Alex Kuczynski.) Applicants are reportedly expected to have at least a few hundred million dollars in the bank, and need to be able to afford not just the asking price but the potential five-figure monthly maintenance. (A special assessment for façade work in 1990 cost each shareholder $258,000.) There are only 32 units in the building."

57th Street Reopened After Crane Malfunction in Midtown
By MARC SANTORA
Published: October 7, 2013

Quote:
A crane malfunctioned on Monday at the same Midtown Manhattan high-rise that was the scene of a crane accident during Hurricane Sandy.

Around 9:30 a.m., the crane, at 157 West 57th Street, between Avenue of the Americas and Seventh Avenue, was being used to hoist a concrete counterweight weighing thousands of pounds when it stopped working properly, leaving the load hanging about 30 stories above the street for several hours.

A one-block stretch of 57th Street was closed to vehicular traffic. Eventually, workers were able to slowly lower the load down to the ground, and about 4 p.m., the street was reopened.

The authorities had said they were working the fix the problem as quickly as possible because winds were expected to pick up later in the day and New York City was under a tornado watch.

The crane is at the same 74-story luxury skyscraper where, one year ago, an 80-mile-per-hour gust of wind during Hurricane Sandy almost sent the boom of a crane crashing down to the streets below.

After the storm, a new crane was erected so work could continue on the building, one of the tallest construction projects in North America, where top-floor apartments have sold for around $100 million.

After the previous crane was damaged in the storm, the surrounding blocks were evacuated for six days as workers struggled to secure the crane and its boom before ultimately dismantling it.

No, that was a report specifically dealing with the tornado watches that were issued earlier. The crane malfunction had nothing to do with the weather.

Crews Secure Massive Counterweight At Midtown Skyscraper

By: Jon Weinstein
October 7, 2013

Quote:
Vehicle and pedestrian traffic on West 57th Street between Sixth and Seventh Avenues reopened Monday after crews worked to secure a massive crane counterweight that had been dangling 40 stories above.

According to the city Office of Emergency Management, a hydraulic failure caused the crane to break at the 79-story One57 building. Engineers worked to manually lower the 13,500-pound counterweight to the ground.

Timing was of the essence as high winds from a line of storms made their way into the area. Con Edison shut off gas and steam pipe service to nine buildings nearby as a precaution.

"It's very dangerous and you know it's a big inconvenience. And that may sound ridiculous as a New Yorker, people are moving quick and everything but it is an inconvenience to people's daily life and you know all the businesses on 57th and the traffic," said one New Yorker who watched the events unfold.

"This is New York and people build things and it's just gonna happen, as long as it doesn't happen to me," said another passerby.

Extell's remarks on the incident...

http://observer.com/2013/10/one57s-t...tion-incident/

Quote:
As part of the process of removing the crane at One 57, hoisting equipment for the tower crane sustained a malfunction earlier today. NYC agencies were immediately notified. All safety systems worked as designed. With safety as the priority, the team expedited bringing in an additional crane mechanic prior to starting the backup lowering process. 57th Street was temporarily closed as a precautionary measure.

The crane’s block was lowered and fully secured on the ground without incident and 57th Street was reopened at 3:30pm today. Thank you to all NYC agencies including DOB, Cranes and Derricks, NYPD, FDNY and OEM for their support and assistance. We apologize to the community for the inconvenience.

Wow, great shot. I fee like one57 always looks so much better at night. I don't really like how the sun reflects off of it compared to it glimmering in these night shots.

An older shot that really shows the dominance of this tower over the CPS skyline, and Central Park...

Having just ended a feud with Vornado, Extell still has other battles to fight for supremacy of 57th Street....

Extell sues Sheldon Solow in latest blow over 57th Street site

October 10, 2013 12:12AM
By Katherine Clarke

Quote:
The tables have turned on famously litigious landlord Sheldon Solow, who is now facing a lawsuit from another major Manhattan real estate player, Gary Barnett. Extell Development, led by Barnett, has accused Solow of getting in the way of the start of construction on his latest project, a new tower at 16-18 West 57th Street, according to a petition filed yesterday in New York State Supreme Court.

Solow has allegedly refused to grant access to his three properties ringing Barnett’s site. Barnett claimed he needs access to 10 West 57th Street, 20 West 57th Street and 19 West 56th Street to conduct structural surveys and install protections before demolishing an existing five-story building on his site.

Barnett is preparing the property for development – likely a hotel project — despite having put it on the block earlier this year with Darcy Stacom and Bill Shanahan of CBRE, according to previous reports. Solow had initially expressed interest in purchasing the site, but those negotiations collapsed in July, prompting Barnett to decide to develop it himself, according to the petition.

Extell purchased the site for $80 million in 2011 from residential broker Ilan Bracha, chairman of Keller Williams NYC, and development partner Haim Binstock. He reportedly outbid Solow for the site at the time in an effort to prevent the landlord from assembling such a large package on 57th Street at the same time that Barnett had been planning One57, his residential tower at 157 West 57th Street, which is now topped out.

With the addition of 16-18 West 57th Street, Solow would have had a 23,750-square-foot lot with a total 356,250 buildable square feet, according to previous reports.
