Is the Horizon Mall open yet? And if so, has anyone gotten out there yet?

Looks interesting, but I question the location. Whereas CrossIron & Horizon are on the way to Airdrie, this particular development is not part way to anything. Or do I know understand where it is going?

Thank-you! The building looks very impressive.

I'm looking forward to it. It is unique, while at the same time, adding to an existing successful commercial area. I recall when CrossIron opened I was skeptical, but it has far exceeded any expectations w.r.t. number of visitors, sales figures, and ability to create a commercial critical mass. The area is now exploding, and the success undeniable.

The house that is visible from the QE2 between the two malls is occupied or no? That would suck for noise and traffic, if so!

I believe it is still being lived in. There are a few holdouts left in the area. My friends parents live basically across the road from the new amazon warehouse.

I’ve heard of mixed use, but that’s ridiculous!

To be fair to my buddies parents they have been trying to sell their house for a few years and have had deals in place only to have neighbors able to defeat the sale due to intended use, which is odd seeing as the entire area is rezoned. Last I heard they had another deal in place to sell and were waiting on the county to approve

So looks like while all the stalls/stores are sold, the purchasers are not people wanting to operate stores, but rather are now themselves looking for others to lease from them. The result is only 9 shops open out of over 500.

Perhaps the Christmas season will turn it around.

New Horizon Mall sitting mostly empty following summer opening

A trip to the New Horizon Mall makes for a lonely, if not slightly post-apocalyptic, experience.

The mammoth mall was billed as a modern, international bazaar with an Asian flavour, opening quietly this summer just outside Calgary, south of the CrossIron Mills megamall.

But of its 517 retail units, only nine — less than 2% — are currently occupied and open for business, despite the mall being open since June.

There should have been a stipulation in the sales/leasing contracts that store operators already signed on had to be open for business by a certain date. Christmas is just around the corner and stores should be ready to sell product well before then!

they should have tried to attract a T&T as an anchor. Aberdeen Centre in Richmond was fairly empty for a long time but its full now, Daiso is a huge draw as well as the food court. They added an expansion a few years ago and it's mostly empty, same deal where investors buy a unit than lease it out. It's even steps away from a Canadian Line stop but still pretty dead.

Louis Vuitton opens on friday at Chinook.

Louis Vuitton Prepares to Open 1st Standalone Alberta Store
October 23, 2018

By Mario Toneguzzi

Luxury fashion retailer Louis Vuitton is opening on Friday a standalone location in Calgary’s CF Chinook Centre.

The global brand, which had been located in the downtown Holt Renfrew store for many years, will have its first standalone store in an enclosed mall in Canada based on the main level of the popular shopping centre.

“The long-anticipated opening of the Louis Vuitton store has set off a buzz in the Calgary luxe shopping community and complements an emerging high-end pocket of retail sizzle at the Chinook Centre,” said Michael Kehoe, an Alberta-based retail specialist and broker of Fairfield Commercial Real Estate in Calgary. “Chinook Centre has been pursuing luxe retail for several years. The Centre’s emerging higher-end tenant cluster led by the new Louis Vuitton store enjoys the synergistic traffic benefits of being nestled in by Nordstrom and Saks Fifth Avenue.

I'm not sure where this "first" is coming from - there was previously a standalone LV store in Cascade Plaza in Banff.

Yes retail-insider has selective memory at times

Louis Vuitton Sees Weekend Crowds with Calgary Opening [Photos]
October 28, 2018

Paris-based luxury brand Louis Vuitton has opened its first standalone store in Calgary as it shifts its strategy to open standalone stores in major malls. The beautiful 4,200 square foot CF Chinook Centre store was busy on its opening weekend, according to shoppers in the mall, and its success could lead to other luxury brands looking to open in the centre.

At the same time, Louis Vuitton’s ground-floor concession at Holt Renfrew in Calgary’s CORE shopping centre has closed, marking the end of the brand’s run in the city’s downtown where it has been doing business for many years. The brand operated a small concession at Holt’s former downtown Calgary store which, in 2008, relocated to a much larger space that was originally created for now defunct department store chain Eaton’s.

Lowes closing two Calgary locations, and Co=op closing their only store in the NW, north of McKnight (that I am aware of).

why are people so obsessed with this mall? do they not understand how the asian malls operate or work? We have numerous near empty chinese malls that use the buy a unit concept that sit empty. There was one built in Surrey maybe in the late 90's that has sat empty without a peep of anything about to happen.

Aesop is opening a store at Chinook next year

Quote:
Mackage is said to have secured a space in the mall as has upscale skin care brand Aesop, and popular vegan accessory brand Matt & Nat will also open in the mall in early 2019.

Noticed that the new Bow Cycle store on Bowfort Road (across from Winsport) is closed and a 'For Lease' sign is up. With the new interchange changing sightlines I never noticed that until this week. That location didn't last long.

Saw that this morning as well. Wonder if they moved? It was a pain to access with the new design of the road
