That Welland house is trying to maintain the styling of a mid-century ranch with the lot presence of a Brooklyn brownstone.

Sometimes I do dream about just having a bachelor pad type "loft" on a mezzanine level in big shop/garage. ALL the room for hobbies. But apparently the wife needs things like "walls" and "no engine parts on the work bench kitchen table".

A guy near my parents did essentially this, built a big three car garage with an apartment above it. And then 5-10 years later built a big house attaching to it.

Originally only the part on the left was there:

For some reason FB thinks this is what I want to see. Another real estate posting for a house in suburban St. John's. This time, the Town of Paradise. I think all the various "democratic people's republics" are the only bigger misnomer.

And to make it worse, that's not a cove. It's some lake, I forget the name. Paradise is at a high elevation - lots of snow, lots of trees and things that survive in St. John's won't make it there. And I guarantee there's maybe 3 inches of topsoil on top of rock there at most.

Also, Paradise is still in that backwoods phase where absolutely any development proposed is viewed as a beneficial windfall. Unlike in St. John's, there are no requirements for sidewalks or any sort of thing that will make repairing/replacing infrastructure easier in the future.

So now he has 6 garage doors
Is the one on the right for cars and one on the left for everything else?
Decent looking house minus so many garage doors. They must be wealthy

Probably. I'd guess maybe a trades vehicle, probably quad/snowmobile/lawnmower, etc. Maybe an old classic car. I'll keep an eye out next time I go by.

Forgot about historic streetview, here's the "before"

I almost spat out my coffee when I read this and forgot to comment
Franco Ontarians don't have the same sense of style as Montréalers

so strange seeing it like that. I wonder if the Norfolk county rumour mill was "Did you hear they ran out of money? Look at that thing, a garage masquerading as a house"

That strip of grass on the left cracks me up. These were probably tolerably nice enough before cars doubled in size and people opted for drivelawns.

EDIT:

Shades of NE Calgary. Except ours have faces.

Calgary Mansard Faced Wickermonstrosity's incursion into Clockzilla's realm didn't end well.

I find Alberta is awful for the "Garage houses".. I mean I feel like most Calgary / Edmonton suburban houses look like this..

https://www.google.ca/maps/@51.18197...8192?entry=ttu

Compared to a more "typical" ontario home where the garage doesn't dominate as much..

Dude, Ontario was "snout house" prominent garage central with everything built in the GTA in the 90s. These are from Ajax. I picked it because I recall the Toronto Star ads boasting of all the new subdivisions. Mattamy 35, 40 foot lots. Act now!

Where I live these represent a good portion of the single family, semi-detached, townhouse housing typologies one would see. The building boom eras skipped most of the 80s/90s vinyl box or 90s/00s "snout house" styles. A mix of good, bad, and ugly

Wtf is that? You should have tagged that with NSFW even though I’m not at work. I don’t care if that backed onto an alley, that is just… I don’t know what to say.

This is a back alley isn't it? I wonder though if they get people bothering them for a quick oil change or repairs?
But I guess you can credit them for building urbanist friendly laneway housing.
