The family and I ate there a couple of years back. The food was good, but we were the only people in there. I'm a fan of German food, but it's a bit of a drive for lunch.

I had always meant to go to that restaurant and never made it there. Too bad.

It's strange how they say that the future was uncertain this past week despite the fact the building had been listed for sale for a while. It would have been uncertain if someone else got there offer excepted instead of the owners of the establishment.

No more 'cells & bells': Sackville committee proposes new 21st-century school
Sackville Schools 2020 hopes to replace local elementary, middle and high schools with a new model

An interesting read. I'm not sure I'm entirely on board with everything they espouse, but this could be an interesting project.

Quote:
The new school, whether it be one large school with different wings for elementary, middle and high school, or three separate schools, may even be part of the Mount Allison University campus, Fox said.

Members of Mount A's administration are part of an advisory committee and Fox said he hopes the schools will share resources with the publicly funded campus.

"Why don't we pool these resources so the university becomes a physical anchor, as it has been for over a century," Fox said. "But it's also a pedagogical thoroughfare, where students can get ahead."
If MTA still had a Faculty of Education, the proposed integration between the public schools and the university could be even greater and more meaningful, with the university education students getting involved in all levels of the public school experience.

Maybe it's time to repatriate the education program from Crandall University back to MTA............

An interesting and unique concept. I wish the owner well. Apparently he's been receiving enquiries from across Canada,

Here's a link to Sackville's updated master plan, called Sackville 2022.

https://sackville.com/wp-content/upl...aft-Dec.-8.pdf

Like a lot of these types of documents, a lot of platitudes and a definite paucity of specifics.......

So there is now a plan out there for a new six unit windmill farm in Sackville capable of producing enough power for 7,000 homes. The electricity would be sold to NB Power.

Early days yet, but it will be interesting to see where this goes........

For the 19th time, Mount Allison has been recognized as the best undergraduate university in the country by MacLean's Magazine.

Alex Colville's tiny studio recreated in his former Sackville home
Studio will help students learn the importance of having their 'own creative space'
By Jonna Brewer, Posted: Oct 24, 2017 7:19 PM AT Last Updated: Oct 24, 2017 7:19 PM AT
http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/new-br...ouse-1.4369451

Quote:
Alex Colville and his wife, Rhoda, bought the house in 1949, fixed it up a little and moved in the following year. They stayed for the next 22 years and raised their four children there.
Quote:
Mount Allison purchased the house in 1981. It served as a student residence. Then in 2009, the university opened it up to the public as a summer interpretive centre.
Quote:
"When Alex Colville died in 2013, they (the family) didn't want to separate or disperse his studio," Kelly said of the family. "It just felt wrong to them.

"So they approached Mount Allison asking if we'd be interested, and we thought it would be a perfect fit for the house."

Quote:
In Sackville this week, Kelly went to a door off the main room, unlocked it and stepped inside the room where Colville's studio has been recreated.

For Colville admirers, it's almost overwhelming to be standing in the creative space that feels like he just left.

His easel and chair are placed just so, the cupboard doors are open to reveal shelves crammed with small pots of paints and brushes, speckles of paint around the easel and work table, a roll of paper towel at one end to wipe his hands, and the lab coat he wore hanging on the original hanger on the door.

"By the time he reached mid-career and certainly by the time he was in the Wolfville studio, he was an artist with an international reputation," Kelly said.

Quote:
The Colville studio will be open to the public on Friday, from 1 to 7 p.m. Admission is free. The studio will reopen for the public again next summer.

Mount Allison University is currently working on three larger renovation projects on campus that will hopefully draw more students to the university.

Work is continuing on converting the former fine arts building on York Street into a ‘research and learning centre’ focused on the WET sciences such as biology and environmental studies. The exterior work should wrap up this winter, with the interior work then getting under way.

Work is also taking place to upgrade the chemistry building, “a 50-year-old facility that needed a great deal of work”.

The university also recently wrapped up the planning phase for work on Windsor Hall, the university’s largest residence. Windsor Hall, which is located across from the Avard Dixon building and situated next to Jennings dining hall, will close in May for a “complete interior refurbishment.”

“That’s a significant project and will bring that residence up to current standards, both in terms of building systems but also in amenities students expect in residence today.”

The upgrade will include a multi-purpose room on the first floor, which will prove useful for groups wanting to use that facility throughout the summer conference season.

CBC reports that the old RCI transmitter site on the Tantramar Marsh has beeb purchased by a MicMac development corporation.

The site encompasses 222 acres. They are unsure what they might use it for yet, but some ideas they are floating around would be retail or marijuana or honey production.

Sackville Exit 506
LAND USE & FUNCTIONAL PLAN

A plan to completely re-envision the eastern entry into the town of Sackville:

https://sackville.com/wp-content/upl...eb-21-2018.pdf

HIGHLIGHTS:
1. Alex Colville Memorial Park to celebrate the location of several of his paintings
2. Preserving woodlots and trees, but adding walking trails that connect to the dyke system
3. Pedestrian friendly design that incorporates sidewalks and crosswalks
4. Bike lanes to connect the downtown core to the Bridge Street Terminus
5. Potential for an increase in the diversity of residential use
6. Support increase in business (possible commercial plaza)
7. Support tourism related business, as well as possibility to cater to RV, and camping

In short:

- The Bridge Street/Cattail Ridge intersection is envisaged to become a roundabout.
- The land on the NE corner of the intersection is envisaged to be developed for a commercial plaza (parking in the back), mixed use residential and a small institutional component.
- Trails will be included in behind, as well as a park overlooking the river and the train bridge - the Alex Colville Memorial Park. The park will celebrate his life's work and his connection to the lands surrounding Sackville. I really like this concept!!
- All streets will have wide paved shoulders for bike lanes. This will be continued down Bridge Street to the downtown area.
- Lots of trees and foliage.

Alex Colville Memorial Park, showing it's relationship to the nearby rail bridge, and also showing the overlook over the river on the abutment of the old highway bridge.

The most startling thing for this Sackville project is the surveying they did with participants. 30% said new residential developments were not relevant (more than triple the non-relevancy of any other question asked), 70% said higher density housing options were a low priority (a similar number for big box)...

I get what they're going for with the development but there isn't a massive difference between their "Typical Commercial Strip Development" and their "Village Core Commercial Development" - they're both car-oriented just one has a better way of hiding it.

There's good intentions here but it seems like they're going to end up with a couple strip-mally buildings off a highway exit on the edge of town. The park is nice.
