One Day Visit Recommendations Pour une Visite d'un Jour

I've been thinking about popping over to Montreal for a one day trip next semester before I leave Ottawa for good, as I'm not sure the next time I'll be this far east. Are there any sites that are a 'must see' for someone visiting? I'm planning to keep expenses to a bear minimum (might even bring a lunch) because of my Scottish cultural influences and all that, so museums and whatnot will be a no go. Also I don't have a car, so that's a limiting factor. I'm guessing a climb up the mountain is a good idea?

(hoping my French is still legible after a few years of minimal practice)

Your french is good. Thank you for making some efforts.

Few ideas :

-Get up to the Olympic stadium tower
-Eat a poutine at La Banquise
-Vist Notre-Dame basilica
-Hiking the mountain is really Worth it yes. There is two observation decks, one looking to downtown. The other one to the East.

And many more...

You're welcome anytime in Québec city aswell

Glad to know my immersion wasn't a wasted effort.

I'll look into those. Also glad to know one deck looks east. I'll try to take some pics since we never seem to see that view on this site.

That's a bit longer and more expensive of a trip sadly. I'd love to do it, but a student budget is tight.

Habitations Jeanne-Mance, Ontario St East.

Superb commie blocks from the late 1950s and not too far from downtown.

Is that meant to be a joke about my preferred building styles? Because those brown brick buildings with stick out balconies like that are not the type I like.

The towers of the Golden Square Mile look nice though.

I'm guessing it might be kind of chilly when you visit. You might want to consider picking up a 1-day pass on the Metro for $10 (individual fares are going up to $3.25 next year).

The main thing I would advise is to pick a direction that looks interesting and wander. But do try and visit Mount Royal and Old Montreal at a minimum.

McGill University's main (downtown) campus is a must-see (if for no other reason than your Scottish cultural background... ). It doesn't get much more Scottish than that in Montreal, except maybe the Highland Games, but that's during the summer.

Enter through the Roddick Gates at the top of McGill College Avenue (corner of Sherbrooke Street) for the most visual bang for your buck
