Boise to charge for Saturday parking Downtown. Here’s how to avoid a ticket.

Quote:
Starting Feb. 1, for the first time ever, the city of Boise will charge people to park in its metered spaces Downtown.

Enforcement of parking fees and the writing of parking tickets will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturdays. People who leave their cars overnight can pre-pay their meters for up to two hours so that they have until noon to return and avoid a ticket.

Public weighs in on proposed parking fee, enforcement increases in Boise

Quote:
The city anticipates that by making changes to metered parking downtown, longer-term parkers will move elsewhere and there will be more "churn" in the coveted spots in front of restaurants, bars and shops. This was something the majority of downtown business owners who weighed in agreed with on Tuesday.
Quote:
The city says the uptick of events and infrastructure downtown is driving this update; studies show parking is at 90 percent capacity pretty much all day.

Remember there is a parking app for meters downtown!

This is great news since Boise is getting so much attention lately as a vacation/destination city.

Here is information regarding the Leadville Bikeway project from ACHD.

General Description

The Ada County Highway District (ACHD) is launching an effort create a successful, bike friendly alternative to Broadway Avenue on nearby Leadville Avenue. Leadville Avenue runs parallel to Broadway Avenue and serves as a connection from Southeast Boise to Broadway Avenue, Boise State University, the Greenbelt and downtown.

Why Leadville?
Leadville Avenue was first identified as a potential bikeway in the 2009 ACHD Roadways to Bikeway Plan, and again in the 2013 Southeast Boise Neighborhood Walking and Biking Plan. These plans identified Leadville Avenue as a much-needed low-stress alternative for bike traffic on Broadway Avenue.

Treasure Valley Cycling Alliance

8th Street temporary BIKE LANE/ROAD CLOSURE: the southbound bike lane and northbound sharrows on 8th street will be closed to all through traffic, including through bike movement, during the daylight work hours, starting next week and continuing until June. Please respect the barricades and the flaggers. The sidewalks will be open and usable by persons walking and biking, but are a DISMOUNT zone for bikes/boards during the work hours of the project. The road will be open when construction is not happening, but be aware, it is still a construction zone and you will need to use caution. Deliveries will still happen on this street, but the bike lane will be closed. Sandwich boards and information will be available next week.

We were invited to the construction meeting at City Hall today to get information on this closure and the work being done. 8th Street is getting some much needed work done on the sidewalks, including putting in new trees, new tree grates, permanent bike racks, new light poles, and retractable bollards at the south/north ends of this great block. This project will be done in quadrants, starting with the southwest side of the street by Ruth's Chris and ending with the southeast corner by the American Clothing Company. Please respect the closure and either dismount and walk your bikes for two blocks or find a suitable detour. It may get complicated, so watch our page for more information and some tips on movement through the zone.

There will also be work on Freak Alley/Union Alley, including finishing the paving/lighting/drainage and putting in new signage. Be aware of this work too, as it will overlap some of the work on 8th Street from March to May. (starts after Treefort)

And, finally, there will be work happening on Capitol Boulevard, including rebuilding sidewalks to include Silva cells (allows for tree growth) and extension of the protected bike lane one block north and 2 blocks south of City Hall. There will be a lot going on for this project, so we'll expect to see a big construction zone again. Patience riders and walkers, these are good things.

It's important to support the businesses in these construction zones, so show them that the bike community means business for them!

According to the Parks and Rec Facebook page, they are closing due to construction on the Wassmuth Center for Human Rights (Anne Frank Memorial).

Jeezuz...expansion...Did they hear my criticism of it facing the wrong direction, destroying the most important pedestrian node in the city, and make riding bike on the greenbelt dangerous so they just decided to double down on it?

Agreed. Onweiler is rolling over in his grave. It's like the exact opposite of Riverside Village. In fact, Riverside Village is more true to the original greenbelt concept than Monument Row (Shoreline to Broadway).

Doesn't city code spell out development setbacks on the greenbelt? It varies but, iirc, it's 70' in older areas and 200' feet in others, usually newer areas. I assert that the Anne Frank Memorial and the Firefighters Memorial are in violation of the greenbelt setback ordinance, or Boise River System Permit ordinance. Politics makes for strange bedfellows, we should get anti growther and anti tax waster BoiseGuardian to file a lawsuit to stop greenbelt setback encroachment. I don't mean setback from the 6500 cfs line of the greenbelt itself, although that's probably relevant, I mean the landward setback of structures from the greenbelt. I think that's 20'. Years ago the city took the Econo Lodge between Man & Fairview to court over their swimming pool's encroachment, and the city won that case. Look how much green space there is there.

11-05-06 covers some of this.

I've written about it before, everyone should read former Boise Parks Superintendent Gordon Bowen's book Boise's Parks: A Cause and a Trust especially the entire chapter devoted to encroachment.

Yes, it is for the new construction in the AFM. I believe the LED lights are being installed soon, but I can confirm with a friend who would know.

This is going to be a great addition. I cycle through that area of the Greenbelt several times a week and there is nothing dangerous about it. Courteous bikers slow down because there are usually a lot of pedestrians on the path in that location. The part of the Memorial directly adjacent to the Greenbelt is really nice and draws people off the path and onto the grounds.

Encroach away if indeed it is, it's not hurting anyone. The inspirational vibe of this memorial is what is important.

Airport Master Plan Update

Awhile back I shared some images of the potential full terminal build-out of the airport. They now have a preferred concept and are already starting to implement steps towards that build-out. Some key highlights of the new plan include a new employee parking garage, another long term garage expansion, several lot conversions, relocating the rental car lot, and of course finally, building out Concourse A. They also discussed the third runway, the consolidated cargo facility and south airport land plans. The current master plan timeline looks out to 2038, a twenty year timeline. It currently doesn't seem like they anticipate an extension the terminal ticketing/baggage area. The area is reserved for future build out but doesn't show it in any long range plans.

In the City Council Work Session last week, they mentioned that they tentatively could do the Concourse A extension in 4-7 years. In today's Council work-session, there are several budget items related to the airport. They are asking for money to move the cell phone waiting lot over to the economy lot off of Victory and Orchard. The current spot is too popular and backs out into the traffic lanes.
Another item they are asking for funding for is to relocate the ITD hangar at the southeast corner of Luke and Rickenbacker St. This is the area shown for the new rental car lot. This is the first step in getting the Concourse A construction. They will relocate the the ITD hangar somewhere else on Airport property.
They are also asking for a large budget increase for the new employee parking garage as well. This indicates that the project is moving forward fairly fast and that construction could begin in the next few years or so.

If you're interested in hearing about the master plan update give to City Council last Tuesday, here is the link to the video: http://boisecityid.iqm2.com/Citizens...Format=Minutes. The airport is discussed at 1:43:00

Thanks for posting. Although we've gotten increasing frequency and upgrades to mainline on BOI-SEA, it seems like it's been a while since we've gotten an addition of a new city and/or new airline. Hopefully, the new strategic plan is something BOI officials can point to when they're marketing the city. The lack of growth in air service seems a bit out of step with all of the national hubbub on Boise's population growth.

In late 19th century, electric streetcars were a big deal in Boise

Quote:
Boise City chartered the Boise Rapid Transit Company, an electric street railway system, on May 28, 1890, just weeks before Idaho became the 43rd state of the Union on July 3.

The Idaho Statesman followed the development of Boise’s electric street car system with interest, aware that it was one of the first in the nation.

There's not a whole lot of places to go or airlines to add. Until Boise can sustain a 737-size aircraft to the East Coast I don't see much happening. I really only see Delta being able to do that to Atlanta (something they've already tried). Perhaps Alaska adds something to the new SFO hub?

Regional airlines are having pilot shortages and other similar sized airports are having similar passenger growth numbers, so tough to get priority. Boise really has a great service level thanks to Southwest and Alaska's point to point flying that other airports of similar size don't have. I get a little perplexed with people stating how expensive or difficult it is to fly out of Boise. It isn't LAX, but you can't expect that. The average fare is quite low there too. Sure flying to another small or mid size city is expensive, but plenty of affordable fares to West Coast cities. Plus, Southwest has added some flights and destinations, American has added service, and United has as well.

I had heard an airline was considering adding/growing a flight crew base, but the source is from a rather unreliable work group. And based on the new concourse it appears the airport is expecting a reduction in regional aircraft. Not sure if that is just based on an algorithm or they have been told they need room for that.

There have been aircraft upgauges to existing flights which have covered growth. In July 2018, per the airport commission, the airport will have 12% more flights and 15% more seats. Here are notable year-over year changes from last summer:

-Allegiant adds Phoenix-Mesa, MD-80
-American upgauges to 2x-daily 737-800 on Dallas/Ft. Worth
-American upgauges Chicago to E-175
-American goes 4x daily to Phoenix (14% increase in seats)
-Alaska goes 2x daily 737-700/800/900 on Seattle, increases frequency
-Alaska increases frequency on Spokane
-Frontier adds Denver with A320
-United upgauges San Francisco flight to 737-900
-Southwest adds Saturday-only Dallas-Love Field
-Southwest adds 1x daily flight to San Jose

There are a few trends that surprise me. Los Angeles strikes me as underserved. There are only 2x daily RJ flights total, plus a 2x weekly flight on Allegiant.

New additions I'm hoping to see soon:
-American or Alaska to LAX
-Delta to ATL (as mentioned by boi2socal), this is a perfect CS100 route
-Southwest returning to Seattle or Portland
-Unlikely, but for the sake of an out-of-the-box pick.. Hawaiian to HNL on the A321neo, on a semi-weekly basis.

On the other side, I could see Alaska nixing Reno and Salt Lake City service. These are pre-merger flights that always seemed on the bubble, and post-merger I have doubts they fit into the new Alaska strategy.

I suspect because so many people in the Treasure Valley are from Southern California and they have a knowledge of the LA Basin that traffic is split up between the other airports, even if it requires a connection. Many people that are familiar with their options simply avoid LAX - if Burbank is the same price, I'll go there with the connection. Southwest and Delta both offer a plethora of flights with travel times under four hours even with connections (or same plane service) to all the SoCal commercial airports. That's why you see Southwest and Alaska to San Diego, but not LAX. And international connections make more sense out of San Francisco or Seattle for Boise folks.

WN to SNA would be a great add and I'm surprised it hasn't happened yet because of the tech presence in both Boise and Irvine.

Ones I'd love to see:
- WN to BWI
- WN to AUS
- B6 to BOS (Great Circle Mapper suggests this should be in E190's range)
- AC to YYC (CS300)
- UA to EWR
