Given the height of the building and assuming its steel we may see a tower crane be utilized as well

It'll be interesting to watch, one of the few times watching demo could be (almost) as exciting as watching a new tower go up.

I’d like to see lanes of traffic eliminated and the medians and sidewalks widened.

42nd Street could greatly use it. Make it more pedestrian friendly.

Used to work at 245 Park, Lexington Ave is straight up dangerous during rush hour. Would love to see that happen throughout allllllll of Midtown. Needs it.

The City Planning hearing will be next wednesday (Jan 30). I believe those general hearings start at 10 am. Maybe someone will go and get a detailed account of the happenings.

Possibly close to a year or longer. Dismantling takes a while. The low-rise portion could be gone soon though as I would imagine they might wanna use that area as staging for dumpsters, material processing, etc.

Also, anyone know who got the demo contract?

A demolition permit application was filed last week with the city’s Department of Buildings for 270 Park, better known as the Union Carbide building for its original occupant. But the filing is only a preliminary step. Chase still needs to submit materials that detail how the company plans to proceed with the demolition and comply with safety requirements, according to DOB officials.

DOB First Deputy Commissioner Thomas Fariello and Borough Commissioner Scott Pavan said on Thursday that the agency will have to examine many facets of the project, including its coordination with the Department of Transportation to ensure that cars and pedestrians are protected. They added that it was too early to say when the demolition, which will be completed in stages, will commence.

The company has said it anticipates completing the demolition sometime in the fourth quarter of 2020. It then intends to replace it with a new 70-story headquarters that can accommodate 15,000 employees; 270 Park currently accommodates about 6,000 of Chase's workers.

Latest permit filing....

In December, JP Morgan Chase unveiled a plan to reduce the POPS surrounding the base of its headquarters at 270 Park Avenue—where the not-long-for-this-world Union Carbide Building stands—from 10,000 feet to 7,000 feet. The plan failed to win over Community Board 5’s land use committee, and will be represented with a finessed concept in the coming months.

the twins were my favorite "boxes" in the city . .
270 Park was my 3rd favorite clean classy box in town . .
I liked all 3 of them better than the sacred modernist shrine . .
the revered Seagram "box" just up the street . .
now my top 3 modern rectangular-solid pieces
of NYC architecture will be gone . .
they'd better do something spectacularly auspicious here . .

Last week demolition permits were filed for the Union Carbide building at 270 Park Avenue, which will be replaced by JP Morgan Chase with a new 70-story tower designed by Foster & Partners. Due to its location, the building will not be demolished using explosives. Instead, it will be covered in cocoon netting and disassembled piece by piece, first removing harmful materials, then working inside out to remove everything from doors and fixtures to the steel structural columns and concrete slabs.

Tallest skyscraper to be demolished. In terms of square footage, Vegas had some quite big demo jobs that would eclipse this, but they did not have the height.

I think this is a pretty big loss too, but excited to see what Foster does here.

I don't think we're losing much. I can't think of a particular reason why this one needs to stand forever. If it's for age's sake, then all of Manhattan should practically be preserved. Just about every building is filled with history in one form or another. I wonder, if they could dissemble it and assemble it in another city, would anyone take it? Or would they prefer new and modern construction? More likely the newer and modern tower.
