Chuckaluck's picture above provides a nice segue between Carpenter's Sandwiches (far right) and the view down Wilshire that I've been looking at.
I know the tiled Texaco service station at New Hampshire and Wilshire has been on NLA several times before, but I think this close-up is new. The service station stood nearly opposite the I. Magnin store - for a wider shot of both, and a lot more history of this block, see GW's blogspot post on 3240 Wilshire Boulevard.
Here's a better view of the service station. Again, I know that similar pictures have been posted before, but I don't remember seeing this one with the Green T Cafe on the left. There's three zoomable pictures in the set (link below image).
Of course, this is the old Calpet station, but I did doubt that for a while because e-r's earlier picture makes it look like the wings sweep back.
I now realize that it's just an optical illusion/camera trickery, as can be seen in the picture below. The Calpet station was adorned with far less signage than the later Texaco.
Here's an impressive snapshot of the Bank of Italy building I found a few months ago on ebay.
At right is the Los Angeles Post Office, and in the distance at far left is the crenelated tower of the old Los Angeles Times building.

All the buildings in this photograph are gone.
This seems to be confirmed by the early City Directories. Up to 1923, the numbering started at 4100, but changed to 4200 from 1926. The 4200 starting number can still be seen in the 1942 CD, but by 1956 it has become 4300, so I assume 42nd had become 43rd by then. Oddly, although the early CDs list numbering that starts at 4100, I couldn't find any addresses under 4200.

It's difficult to see, but "OMAR'S DOME" is just visible on the blade sign above the word "CAFE". USC says it's the Town Theatre that's showing 'Gunga Din'.
Well, I'm about a year behind you in reading through the thread, but like many of you, I'm learning a lot about this city.
Following the threads about the Hotel Rosslyn, I took a break and was watching a music video by Andy Grammer yesterday. I did a spit-take as I saw the Rosslyn loom in the background of this very contemporary and hip vid. Because I'm a year behind, I don't know if this has been posted. I didn't find anything doing a search.

Loved the video. Andy Grammer has a nice style and and great voice. Great sense of humor, too. I remember seeing the Rosslyn in the background of some scenes from the 1977-78 ABC series "Lucan". It was supposed to be Detroit in the winter (didn't know they have palm trees in Michigan!). The main action in those scenes took place a few doors away down South Main Street in a seedy series of buildings that are long gone. BTW, welcome. And take your time getting caught up with the forum. It's a long journey, and a great ride!

Very unexpected find, Fred ! This pristine and narrow section (Spring, Main & Alameda) was always photographed from South to North.

To complement yesterday's 1939 picture of the south side of Hill Street from Fifth (Omar's Dome), this one shows the north side. It was also taken in 1939, but the Town Theatre is showing an unidentified Barrymore movie, so it wasn't taken on the same day.
