Here's a better view of the service station. Again, I know that similar pictures have been posted before, but I don't remember seeing this one with the Green T Cafe on the left. There's three zoomable pictures in the set (link below image).

Of course, this is the old Calpet station, but I did doubt that for a while because e-r's earlier picture makes it look like the wings sweep back.

I now realize that it's just an optical illusion/camera trickery, as can be seen in the picture below. The Calpet station was adorned with far less signage than the later Texaco.

Excellent find BRR!
It's fun seeing the Rossyln Hotel in that music video jtown. (it's a good song as well)

4113 Honduras Street, Los Angeles, circa 1907

I searched for 4113 Honduras Street, but Honduras Street doesn't start until 43rd Street,
google_earth
and continues south to 48th Street.

I checked my 1947 Los Angeles street map and it also has Honduras running from 43rd to 48th.

Here's an impressive snapshot of the Bank of Italy building I found a few months ago on ebay.
At right is the Los Angeles Post Office, and in the distance at far left is the crenelated tower of the old Los Angeles Times building.

All the buildings in this photograph are gone.

More photographs of the Bank of Italy here.

The post office (shaped like a backward C) next to the Bank of Italy at lower right.

I've never heard of this place before.

street view today/zzzzz

At first I wasn't sure if Omar's Dome was located in the left side of the blue building or in the two story Hotel Clark annex.

then I found 436 on the roof of the American Mart blue building. (I had missed it before)

The Baist maps show the street at the north end of Honduras as 42nd Street instead of 43rd Street.

This seems to be confirmed by the early City Directories. Up to 1923, the numbering started at 4100, but changed to 4200 from 1926. The 4200 starting number can still be seen in the 1942 CD, but by 1956 it has become 4300, so I assume 42nd had become 43rd by then. Oddly, although the early CDs list numbering that starts at 4100, I couldn't find any addresses under 4200.

-Very interesting HossC. I thought perhaps the bricklayer had written the wrong address,
but this proves there were 4100 street numbers on Honduras St.

The City Directories list Omar's Dome through the second half of the 1930s. In 1939 it's listed as Omar's Dome Corp at 440 S Hill instead of 436.

I found this 1939 image of Hill Street.

USC Digital Library

It's difficult to see, but "OMAR'S DOME" is just visible on the blade sign above the word "CAFE". USC says it's the Town Theatre that's showing 'Gunga Din'.

Detail of image above.

It looks as if Omar's Dome is now a Grants store.

Another interesting Richfield Station. Los Angeles location, specific address undetermined. Fascinating figureheads adorning the roof supports.

Speaking of treatments, here is one for the Auto Club's tiled dome, by same Calpet architect.

Is it California, or Michigan?

I did a spit-take as I saw the Rosslyn loom in the background of this very contemporary and hip vid. Because I'm a year behind, I don't know if this has been posted. I didn't find anything doing a search.

from Youtube.com

I'm posting the video. You can see the cameo by Rosslyn at about 2:22

Loved the video. Andy Grammer has a nice style and and great voice. Great sense of humor, too. I remember seeing the Rosslyn in the background of some scenes from the 1977-78 ABC series "Lucan". It was supposed to be Detroit in the winter (didn't know they have palm trees in Michigan!). The main action in those scenes took place a few doors away down South Main Street in a seedy series of buildings that are long gone. BTW, welcome. And take your time getting caught up with the forum. It's a long journey, and a great ride!

I watched the old movie "Falling Down" the other day. It was nice to know where the locations mentioned in the movie actually are.

But what is in the background of the photo is also interesting:

Main Street: (corner of Main and Alameda)

http://cdm16003.contentdm.oclc.org/c...id/3845/rec/78

A little more south on Main

http://cdm16003.contentdm.oclc.org/c...id/3845/rec/78

South a little more on Main:

http://cdm16003.contentdm.oclc.org/c...id/3845/rec/78

Back on Alameda - a new Union Station:

http://cdm16003.contentdm.oclc.org/c...id/3845/rec/78

Way down on Main Street is the original Brunswig Drug building and the annex next door. Spring Street runs along the bottom of the photo:

url]http://cdm16003.contentdm.oclc.org/cdm/singleitem/collection/p15150coll2/id/3845/rec/78[/url]
Very unexpected find, Fred ! This pristine and narrow section (Spring, Main & Alameda) was always photographed from South to North.

To complement yesterday's 1939 picture of the south side of Hill Street from Fifth (Omar's Dome), this one shows the north side. It was also taken in 1939, but the Town Theatre is showing an unidentified Barrymore movie, so it wasn't taken on the same day.

USC Digital Library

Off in the distance, you can see straight through the Hill Street tunnels.
