The Great Canadian Castles Thread

Canada did castles. Showcase the castles / chateaus of your city.

I`ll get the ball rolling with Montreal.

McTavish Reservoir, 1932.

The reservoir with the (former) Royal Victoria Hospital behind it.

North Park Armoury in Halifax. This front facade is being restored right now so soon there should be photos without that ugly wooden structure.

Here's a little-known one, the Cornwallis Inn in Kentville NS:

Little castle in Perth-Andover NB. It was built in the 1930s and is on 200 acres. Pretty neat place and somewhat odd.

Castle Manor in Moncton. It has survived in a number of iterations over the years, but is now a condo development:

Neuschwanstein is a Romanesque castle. These are just Romanesque buildings.

I always think of Neuschwanstein as Romantic Revival, though I see it is listed sometimes as Romanesque Revival though the Romans never built in such a vertical style. "Romanesque" always conjures up images of heavily rusticated surfaces and low squat arches, though maybe that's just Richardsonian.

It always make me smile that Neuschwanstein is such a huge tourist draw when it's really not that old, almost a contemporary with Canada's chateau hotels which it shares a lot with.

Shameless use of my photo

^ Beauty of the building and the surroundings are a bigger a factor than age when it comes to the appeal of buildings... go stand outside the Sydney Opera House for a while if you don't believe me.

Yeah, age isn't the be-all end-all. It's perfectly normal that the tourist appeal factor of buildings isn't anywhere near strictly proportional to their age.

Come to think of it, my Lévis duplex is significantly older than Château Frontenac across the river, yet the latter is obviously a 100x bigger tourist draw.

BTW, really nice pic, whatnext

This one in Orlando is about one century younger than Neuschwanstein and is even more visited by tourists from all over the globe:

I think it's common to conflate age and quality since there's so much fake stuff built after WWII. The circa 1890 romantic castle reconstruction is more likely to be stone and hardwood while the 1990's one is more likely to be stick-on foam decorations. But it doesn't have to be so.

Canada doesn't have any real castles so that would be a pretty boring thread.

The real castles in that French style imitated in Quebec were built around 1100-1300.

Thanks, hard to take a bad picture of it on a nice day, though you can't see the hundreds of other people on the same bridge jostling for their shot!

As to my age comment, I meant that tourists from North America and Asia go there thinking it is some super "old-worldy" castle, when in reality it was just finished six years before the Banff Spings Hotel!
