The only time I got related to Detroit was appreciating Detroit skyline from aross the river, the City of Windsor. After the accident that got scammed nearly got jointly attacked in downtown Kansas City, MO, I never explore any downtown that is proved dangerous by media. Sometimes media do tell truth.
I only have to say nice pictures really beautiful but lucky to be safe and sound.

Gary, Indiana..Camden, NJ..East St. Louis..probably not somewhere you'd want to saunter around with a camera. Downtown Detroit and select surroundings..I gave it a shot and have been back numerous times.
Before my first visit to Motown, I heard all the obvious perceptions and knew it wasn't exactly a tourist destination but I'm drawn to the grittiness, architecture and raw atmosphere of a rust-belt town and love new developments that are long awaited.
Media can blow things out of proportion and only the most gullible will hang on it's every word. You'll find trouble if you go looking for it but downtown Detroit is actually safer than most parts of the rest of the city.
Take a hike out there and get lost! I did, and absolutely loved it
