Ulan-Ude, Republic of Buryatia //also lake baikal

Ulan-Ude is a city located in eastern Siberia near Lake Baikal. Indigenous Buryats make up around 30% of the population of the area. I stopped there for a couple days along my Trans-Siberian trip. It's a pretty chill city with a unique vibe. Check it out if you're ever in the neighborhood!

For those that don't know - from Wikipedia

Lake Baikal is the largest freshwater lake by volume in the world, containing 22–23% of the world's fresh surface water. With 23,615.39 km3 (5,670 cu mi) of fresh water, it contains more water than the North American Great Lakes combined. With a maximum depth of 1,642 m (5,387 ft), Baikal is the world's deepest lake. It is considered among the world's clearest lakes and is considered the world's oldest lake – at 25–30 million years. It is the seventh-largest lake in the world by surface area.

Nice pictures! I'm guessing the beach in picture #47 and others is on Lake Baikal.

Any reason why the traffic lights in #49 and #75 are so thin?

Yup, it's from the eastern side, which isn't very touristy compared to the western side closer to Irkutsk.

I'm not sure why the traffic lights are like that and I'm not even sure I noticed until you asked.

It's one of those cities that was closed off to foreigners in the Soviet Union. Maybe that has something to do with it?

That beach has got to be the nicest beach I have ever seen in Russia, better than any beach in Sochi at least.

How was the beach? How was the air and water temperature?

Interesting pictures! Yes, it seems this city still feels very much like the Soviet Union with huge Lenin statues, red stars and everything. Interesting buildnig in picture 5, looks really crazy, like a mix of a deconstructivist building and a ship!

The beach we went to along Baikal was pretty nice, but I don't remember going in the water for some reason. It was probably too cold for me, because the air was around 24 degrees. It definitely felt odd being at a beach with pretty nice sand and also being surrounded by pine trees.

Now if that isn't interesting, what is!!!!

I've known for some time that a number of Chinese have made their way northward into eastern Siberia, and I can see that all too well. And once the Chinese arrive, do they adapt to the Russian language?

I have had no desire to take a train across Russia, but is a nice sample of it, thanks so much for sharing!

If you have a desire to do this in the US, you can go to Sand Harbor at Lake Tahoe. Similarly (since Lake Tahoe is very deep and high up), the water isn't very warm. You can watch Shakespeare there too.

i think what you are seeing is a legacy of well, the historical human geography of central eurasia, that the state boundaries of modern day russia just happens to encapsulate.

Those aren't Chinese , they are natives. Siberia and the Russian Far East is traditionally an ethnic Mongoloid territory taken over by Russia - this area looks Mongol (as in Mongolian).

Awesome pics as always, sabotai - you really get around to some interesting spots. Did you see any Lake Baikal seals?
