Interestingly, the original image for the composite isn't mirrored, and clearly shows the name "MESA VERNON MARKET". It also shows that the grill-work was back-lit, and not displaying nonsense latin.

Here's an early Blimpies in downtown Los Angeles in 1982. (I didn't realize Blimpies have been around that long)

7 TH and Hill. Looking at the 7th street side. I remember going to the Blimpies only once as a kid back in 83' when I used to go to Downtown LA with my grandmother. But we used to hit the McDonald's on the corner of 7th and hill more often late 1970's to mis 80's. It was a Sunday treat. That Mc Donald's had two entrances to it. On Hill and 7th ST. Good memories there. It had the coolest ceiling fans too. They were paddles connected by long belts to a single motor.

If anybody remembers that unique feature please share your memories!

Now I see the place where the Blimpie's is the whole building is the International Jewelry Mart! And the building next door lost it's fire escapes. I had to go to Downtown 2 weeks ago to do Jury Duty and took time to walk around and take pix of my old roaming grounds. I didn't like what I saw as the hipsters have taken over the nitty-gritty Downtown I remember as a kid.

One can just see 1121 S Lake in this photo of this notable block, still mostly intact, taken from 12th St looking up South Lake in 1907 (fifth house on the left with the double gable). I'm sure this photo has been posted before, but I can't find it just now:

I feel compelled to note that that's the Huntsberger-Mennell Bldg. (1917), 410-418 W. 7th St. by William J Dodd, built for Lee Phillips:

WJ Dodd (1862-1930) was born in Quebec and spent the first 32 years of his career in the Midwest (mostly Chicago and Louisville). Dodd's last 18 years were spent in Los Angeles. He managed to get a lot built here, much of it still standing.

Many noirishers know Dodd's work from the Hearld-Examiner Building (1915, with then-partner JM Haenke and lead architect Julia Morgan), The Pacific Mutual Annex AKA The Sentry Building (1921) and the Architects Building (1928 with Wm Richards).

For himself, Dodd built his first (1915), second (1921) and final (1928-1930) Los Angeles homes withing spitting distance of each other in Los Feliz' private Laughlin Park. Deanna Durbin later owned the second one. He was engaged in building a home for his retirement in Playa del Rey when he died (1930).

Dodd was also a ceramic designer of note.

When I did a Google search for 949 W. 7th to get a view of the land, the first thing that came up was a house at that address, but in San Pedro. It is pretty impressive. Would someone who can post, please look at that one and post it. Interestingly, it is in sort of the same style as the other houses in the previous post. Thanks

We've seen Eatons Restaurants and some of their menus before, but I think this location is new to NLA. This is Julius Shulman's "Job 610: Douglas Honnold, Eatons Restaurant (Los Angeles, Calif.), 1949", and the summary says "12010 Ventura Boulevard, Studio City (Los Angeles, Calif.), now demolished." The photographs have index numbers of 9 and 12, so I'm guessing that Mr Shulman took more shots than the two available here. Check out the illuminated chicken ...

As the description says, the restaurant has gone, and I haven't even found any wider shots or postcards of it. Here's an advert from the June 19, 1952 edition of The Van Nuys News which confirms the address.

This may be the interior of the restaurant above, but even the source is unsure. This is "Job 697: Eatons Restaurant, seating,1950" and the summary says "For Schafer Brothers. Architect is probably Douglas Honnold, probably located in Studio City."

The bus was parked on E Adams Boulevard, just west of S Central Avenue. You can just see "ADAMS" on the destination board. Here's how the scene looks today.

The white building on the left of the original picture looked boarded up, so I was surprised to see it still standing. The "NAP..." sign above the green car belonged to the Neighborhood Adult Participation Project Inc at 2510 S Central Avenue. On the right of the original picture was the Mack-Hugh Market at 2530 S Central Avenue.

And yet that beautiful Eaton's on Ventura Blvd. is gone.

I've just found this interior picture of one of the upper floors of 2510 S Central Avenue. Those ugly shutters still let in a fair amount of light.

The permit was pulled in 1928. Originally built as stores and offices. BB Bixby was the architect. CS Blodgett (no relation to Esther) was the owner.
