Luckily both did not occur. Messing up the skyline to take back a title is not worth the effort. In other respects, here are two videos above going up to the two observation decks.

Empire State Building Tower Lights Turn Back On After Earth Hour 2012

Just A Video I Shot a few minutes ago of the ESB Tower lights coming back on after Earth Hour 2012. I thought it was cool to see the ESB lite up live on the webcam! :-) I never saw it light up before live on cam, or in person. This was cool to watch! :-) Only takes 2 minutes to lite all the way! :-) MORE VIDEOS TO COME IN THE FUTURE! -Greg (IntoTheLens827)

I've seen many wonderful pictures of the ESB from the outside or looking out from the 86th. Does anyone know where I could find better pictures or a floor plan of the 86th floor? I'm working on a free game and had hoped to involve the ESB 86th floor in my game. I'd like to make it as accurate as possible. A rough sketch would even be fine, but I've found nothing even close. The commercial real estate page on the ESB wesbite has PDF floor plans for the spaces for rent but nothing on the 86th floor.

Indeed. And only one (midtown) of the two skylines is prominently featured in these shots. As is amply demonstrated below, the downtown skyline of the 1930s-1940s is singularly awesome.

Little did they knew then that in a few decades, two supertalls were going to top above everything else in that shot.

BAH!
And it was one of the worst mistakes NY ever made! The destruction of the above downtown blocks for the WTC was horrific! I won't say more on it to not derail the thread, after all we have a WTC thread already to bitch in about. But want to make the point!

I love the blend of old and new in lower Manhattan! I guess that's why I get frustrated when I hear people lamenting the fact that Lower Manhattan wasn't preserved under some hermetically sealed heritage snowglobe.

There is a reason they call me an Architect Curmudgeon

I will be the first to admit my views are far from reasonable, but they are still my views. And even I wouldn't go so far as to say '"hermetically sealed heritage snowglobe"" But I do find myself at odds with the vast majority of anything built after 1945.

I guess I'm an oddball then, because I have love for the modern skyscrapers lots of people hated. Even One and Two New York Plaza, and 55 Water street. Further north, I've also got love for One Penn Plaza, and One Astor Plaza with its adorable finned crown.
