April 11 - April 25 Look Ahead
APRIL 11, 2014

Quote:
Work continues in buildings C, D, F, and H. Interior demolition has moved quickly through many floors and the abatement phase has begun in multiple buildings. There are also smaller, localized interior abatement projects underway in additional buildings at the Goldwater site.

Since the last construction update, the barge returned to remove debris. Given the interior demolition progress, barging trips will occur more frequently in the coming weeks. While Cornell continues to remove all demolition debris via barging, there are times when trucks with containers may be seen outside of the construction fence. Until one connector building is fully demolished, trucks must travel outside of the construction fence in order to get to the other side of the site. This issue will resolve itself as demolition gets further along. In addition, a small number of trucks should be expected because of the delivery and removal of materials, supplies, and small equipment.

The art conservation firms selected to remove and restore the WPA murals have mobilized on site. Testing of removal methodologies is underway on all three murals. We are on track for actual removal of the works of art later this month. After leaving Goldwater, the murals will undergo conservation work in the firms’ respective studios.

Available options for providing safe vehicular access to the South Point and Four Freedoms Parks continue to be studied by the engineering team.

Inside Roosevelt Island's Abandoned Hospital, Pre-Demolition

http://ny.curbed.com/archives/2014/0...demolition.php
Quote:
Trained as an architect in his native France, Charles Giraudet wanted to enter Roosevelt Island's massive Goldwater Hospital ever since he laid eyes on it about two decades ago. Giraudet, now a full-time photographer, got the chance he'd been waiting for in late December. That was when the last few patients had already been relocated to a new facility in East Harlem—and when the planners of the Cornell NYC Tech campus, for which Goldwater was to be razed, gave him permission to document the sprawling, now-abandoned structure, inside and out. Built in 1939 as the Welfare Hospital for Chronic Disease and later renamed for the city's hospitals chief under Mayor La Guardia, the 2,106-bed institution captivated Giraudet because of the way the architecture of health facilities, the handiwork of the detail-obsessed builder Isadore Rosenfield, was used as part of the therapeutic treatment (sunlight, terraces, etc.) before antibiotics and other meds became de rigueur.

Giraudet's collection of photos now totals 15,584; he estimates he hit almost every single room, closet, rooftop, et al within the hospital's 900,000 square feet. (And yes, that includes the morgue, where he came across some sheets that looked a bit too recently used.) Urban Omnibus has more on his herculean mission. According to Cornell's construction updates, the hospital is currently in the midst of demolishing the interiors of several of the buildings as well as doing asbestos abatement before, so to speak, all the walls come down.

They said the buildings are placed on the northern part of the site not to obstruct sunlight on the solar panels, but I still think it is a pity those buildings will obstruct the view from the Queensboro Bridge...

First Renderings Revealed for Cornell Tech's Residential Tower
http://ny.curbed.com/archives/2014/0...tial_tower.php

Quote:
When Cornell dropped dozens of new renderings of its Roosevelt Island tech campus in December, the residential tower was still a mystery. But no longer. Renderings for the 26-story tower were presented last night to Community Board 8 by Andrew Winters, director of capital projects and planning for Cornell NYC Tech, and architect Blake Middleton of Handel Architects.

Seriously. This island is 50 years outdated. Every building on this island needs to be renovated or just torn down completely. Wouldn't mind if Roosevelt island turned into a giant campus.

Great design Blake Middleton of Handel architects! It looks just like an airport Marriott. Once this is standing next to Mayne's masterpiece, you'll have a badge of shame for the rest of your life.

Permits filed for new Cornell Tech building

Plans call for 190K sf building on the Roosevelt Island campus; city hopes to bring together tech's leading lights

January 05, 2015

Quote:
Plans for a new Forest City Ratner-developed building slated to bring the technology industry’s leading academics and startups to Cornell Tech’s Roosevelt Island campus are moving along.

Architect of record Weiss/Manfredi filed an application today for a permit to construct a nearly 189,000-square-foot office building at Cornell University’s new 2.1 million-square-foot campus, according to Department of Buildings records.

The application calls for a 188,603-square-foot commercial building at 1 Main Street on Roosevelt Island. Plans for the building include office space on all the floors as well as a 38-car garage. The co-location building is slated to “bring together corporate innovators, world-class researchers and energetic start-ups under one roof, a concrete reflection of the campus’ mission of fusing academia and industry to encourage innovation for the public good,” according to a previous announcement by Cornell Tech.

The land is owned by the New York City Economic Development Corporation, which partnered with the university in late 2013. Cornell leases the ground from the city. Construction on the project’s first phase started last year.

Forest City Ratner is also the developer of the first academic building on the island, which is being designed by Morphosis. When completed in 2037, the campus will house facilities for roughly 2,000 graduate students - See more at: http://therealdeal.com/blog/2015/01/....M9kFXkvp.dpuf

Cornell Tech Campus Unveils New Looks

Monday, June 15, 2015
Zoe Rosenberg

Quote:
Now that construction's a go at Cornell Tech's Roosevelt Island campus, things are moving quickly. After Friday's groundbreaking on the school's 26-story Passive House tower, developer Forest City Ratner has unveiled new details and renderings for another of the school's buildings that will rise in phase one of construction.

"The Bridge" as it's heralded in promotional material from the developer (including this corny video), will "house an ecosystem of companies, researchers and entrepreneurs who are focused on catalyzing innovation and the commercialization of new products and technologies." In short, the building will attempt to promote collaboration between the university, established companies and start-ups working in digital technology. The building, designed by WEISS/MANFREDI, will have "flexible spaces" and "loft-like common areas" and will seek to achieve LEED Silver status.

Phase one, which includes the 26-story Passive student housing, The Bridge, and First Academic Building, is expected to be complete in 2017.

Michael Bloomberg donates $100M to Cornell campus

Quote:
Former Mayor Michael Bloomberg is donating $100 million to Cornell University’s tech campus on Roosevelt Island. The money will pay for the first phase of the roughly $2 billion campus, which will include the self-sufficient Bloomberg Center, Crain’s and Bloomberg News reported. The first phase of the project is expected to open in 2017. Bloomberg brokered the deal with Cornell and the Haifa-based Technion-Israel Institute of Technology in 2011 to build the new campus on city-owned land. Skidmore, Owings & Merrill are designing the project. When completed, the campus will span roughly 12 acres and house 2,o00 students as well as multiple hundreds faculty members and staffers, the website reported.

Construction Update

REBECCA BAIRD-REMBA
SEPTEMBER 29, 2015

Quote:
Cornell broke ground on its new tech campus on Roosevelt Island in June, and now a spokesperson for the project has sent along a few photos documenting its progress.

Workers are laying the foundation and driving home the first steel columns for the main academic building, which was christened the Bloomberg Center after the former mayor gifted $100 million for its construction. He chose to name the building after his two daughters, Emma and Georgina Bloomberg.

Cornell hopes the structure will become one of the largest net-zero energy buildings in the world, with all of its energy generated on campus. It will feature a combination of open plan classrooms and offices, as well as private work spaces. Morphosis Architecture—who are also behind the angular Cooper Union building at 41 Cooper Square—designed the futuristic development.

The complex will also encompass The Bridge, a six-story tech incubator that will “house an ecosystem of companies, researchers, and entrepreneurs who are focused on catalyzing innovation and the commercialization of new products and technologies,” according to a press release. WEISS/Manfredi is designing the building, which hopes to achieve LEED Silver certification, and Forest City Ratner is developing it.

Then the third major piece of the campus will be a 26-story residential building, with 500 rooms for faculty, students and researchers. The 270-foot-tall tower will be constructed to Passive House standards, incorporating 15-inch-thick walls to make the structure air-tight. The designer, Handel Architects, chose to create the facade out of prefabricated metal panels, complete with windows installed at the factory, according to the Times. Hudson and Related Companies are the developers.

This is one of the most exciting developments in New York. It will be quite beautiful now with the brutalist canyon and yuppie condos to the north, the drop-dead-gorgeous 59th Street Bidge, and now some contemporary bliss in the form of a tech campus that will lead down to Louis Kahn's masterpiece at the tip of the island. I just hope Roosevelt Island retains some of that errie quietness that makes it such a bizarre place. There is something unsettling about visiting a seemingly deserted dreamscape that is merely a few hundred feet from the vibrating thrum of Manhattan that makes it feel both incredibly familiar and completely separate. Even the word "separate" seems inadequate, because it is just soooo different from the rest of the city. Heck it is unlike any other place in this country. I always feel like I'm in a David Lynch movie or a de Chirico painting when Im there.

I love it.

Superstructure has started to rise at the phase one sites of Cornell's new tech campus on Roosevelt Island. The site is located to the south of the Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge and was formerly home to the Goldwater Hospital, which housed 2,106 beds. Included in the first phase of construction is an academic building by Morphosis, a corporate co-location building by Weiss/Manfredi, a residential tower by Handel Architects, a meeting center for the academic and tech community, a central utility building by SOM, and a campus plaza by Field Operations.

Located on a triangular site at the northwest corner of the campus, the four-story, 160,000-square-foot Bloomberg Center will house the school's initial academic functions. Bronze toned metal panels will clad the exterior, while a roof covered in photovoltaic panels crowns the top floor. The building has been designed with the goal of achieving Net-Zero energy consumption and a LEED Platinum certification. Superstructure has reached the fourth floor, making topping out eminent.

To the east of the Bloomberg Center, the Bridge at Cornell Tech serves as a corporate co-location building. The Weiss/Manfredi designed building will provide space for new and established companies to work on innovative projects. Superstructure has reached the second floor.

Snøhetta wins bid to design Cornell Tech conference center

Quote:
Snøhetta has won a place at the designing table for Cornell Tech’s new Roosevelt Island campus, sources told The Real Deal. The Norway- and New York City-based architecture firm was selected to design the Verizon Executive Education Center, sources said, one of 10 buildings ultimately planned for the 12-acre campus. Snøhetta competed for the project with the likes of Gensler and TEN Arquitectos. Representatives for the firm didn’t immediately return messages seeking comment on Thursday.

The dimensions and design of the conference building were not immediately available. Verizon secured naming rights in February after a $50 million donation. The first phase’s three other buildings — the Bloomberg Center, The Bridge at Cornell Tech and a residential building — are respectively being designed by Thom Mayne, Weiss/Manfredi Architecture and Handel Architects, according to Cornell Tech’s website.

The new campus is being billed as a new paradigm for environmentally-conscious building. The first housing complex, which is being developed by Hudson Companies and Related Companies, will employ passive design, a method that can cut energy costs by 90 percent. Though passive housing has caught on in parts of Europe, the project is expected to be one of the first of its kind in the U.S.

Cornell Tech is slated to open in the summer of 2017, at which point it will cover 2.5 acres on Roosevelt Island. Skidmore Owings & Merrill, the architecture firm behind One World Trade Center, is designing the campus’ master plan, which divides construction into three phases. When the whole campus is finished — projected to be in 2043 — the campus will span 12 acres and have two million square feet of new buildings, according to Cornell Tech’s website.
