Manhattan Bridge Turns 100

Sunday, Oct 4, 2009

Quote:
The youngest of New York's four East River bridges is turning 100.
A series of events are planned as part of a celebration of the Manhattan Bridge centennial on Sunday, including a fireworks show and a parade of vintage cars.
The 1,470-foot span suspension bridge had been plagued with problems stemming from its design by Leon Moisseiff until it began undergoing rehabilitation in the 1980s.
Moisseiff's Tacoma Narrows Bridge in Washington State used a similar designed and collapsed four months after it opened in 1940.
New York City Bridge Centennial Commission President Sam Schwartz says that the design of the bridge and lack of maintenance could have led to an engineering tragedy, but he says that it has since been returned to good condition.
Post photos and adulation below for this beauty
