Thumbs up NEW YORK | Condé Nast Building | 809 ft (1,143 ft) | 48 Floors | 2000

I think this building gets overlooked a lot as it's not really a prominent building in New York's skyline. But due to it's giant antenna, pseudo 'industrial' look, it's place in Times Square, and being one of the 3 'Spires' in Midtown, Conde is a very unique building. I don't think it really gets a lot of respect but it truly is an awesome building.

*Fun fact*

The giant antenna was placed on Conde in 2003 to replace the antenna lost on 1 WTC. Interestingly enough, it makes the building look so much better and complete as before the antenna was put on, the building came to a rather abrupt and ugly stop.

Conde before the antenna

I have a lot of respect and liking for this building. It pretty much set the foundation for the Times Square that most of us know today. As you can see in some of those above shots, even once it was completed, Times Square still wasn’t in the great shape that it is today. Times have certainly changed for that area for indeed the better.

The building itself has very distinct character; the antenna addition really solidified that. It adds a lot of flare to Times Square at base level with of course the NASDAQ drum and ESPN Zone. The tenant entrance of 42nd is also a very elegant touch (the awning is fantastic).

This is easily one of the best to come out of this decade (fully completed).

This is one of my favorites from the decade, as well. It's nice to see something other than pure attempts at postmodern, which usually just end up looking like cheap knock-offs of historic structures. This doesn't try too hard to be anything other than itself, and that really is refreshing. And, yes, the new antenna really finished off the top, nicely. Really, I don't have enough nice things to say about this one.

I really hate the Conde Nast. I hate the shape, I hate the inconsistent facade, and the crown really junks up the skyline.

I just love how inconsistent the facade is, it looks different from every side, it's just so unique, like LMich said, it doesn't try to be anything else but itself. It signaled the start of a new renaissance for Time Square and yet despite it's prominent location I think it gets looked over quiet a bit. My only problem with the building is the top four squares, I just wish they were always filled with advertisements like the renderings suggested, I remember when the building was going up I was excited to see how the top would look like, but today it looks a bit unfinished, except the side with the 4 Times Square logo.

There another logo atop tower for a while, but it seems like it was removed a while back.

The best word I can think of for Conde Nast is "forgettable."

The architects (at that time known as Fox and Fowle and now FXfowle) would probably take that as a complement. They were trying to create a building that on one side expressed the excitement and vitality of Times Square and on the other side worked with the more somber and dignified office towers to the east.

What was created was a gleaming, exciting and high tech building that adds a lot to the feel of the new Times Square. As part of the bigger whole of the area, this building works well.

There are a lot of negative words that could be used for the tower, forgettable would not be among them. Awkward, maybe eyesore, could fit, but "forgettable" (implying boring), seems a very strange/inappropriate description of a tower you simply can't miss (and some want to) on the Times Square skyline.

^Exactly. It's strangely contextual. Odd, but it fits Times Square perfectly (which is not to say that I like it).

D'accord, moi aussi.
Times Square is all about the angles, whether architectural or conjectural.

Yeah, it fits right in, but doesn't have to head butt with the other jagged crowns in the area since it's taller than most. And the new tower is definitely a plus.

Looks like they stuck the top 200 feet of the CN Tower atop this structure. To me, the building is rather fugly.

While definitely a success, it has too many faces to be a favorite of mine.

I had a friend who worked in that building. I always wondered what it would be like to work in Times Square. Probably a huge pain in the butt. Good views, though, I'm sure. Nice building.

That it is, truly a fixture in the skyline at this point.

i think this one is really cool, it fits times square area perfectly. maybe the facade irritates some people but that's what makes it unique. the huge antenna doesn't disturb me neither.
