The undisputed king of the East Bay is back. Solid summer set. I was just in Oakland for an A's game, didn't bring my camera since I figured I'd be stuck in traffic all day. That last one, man, that's a dream spot right there.

Really nice set. Looking forward to Oakland to revitalizing/gentrifying more so it becomes a safer, more cosmopolitan city. It certainly has great bones and architecture to start with. If it weren't for the rampant thug culture that ruins it for everybody.

As a resident of West Oakland, I find this comment offensive and ignorant. I don't see a rampant thug culture in my neighborhood what I do see is rampant drug use and poverty as well as a massive homeless population. I do not feel unsafe walking down the streets here even late at night.

It's a gritty city, and certain pockets and neighborhoods certainly have a violent crime issue, but to say there's a massive thug culture that ruins it for everybody is fucking stupid. Go check out Uptown, Temescal, Rockridge, Adams Point, Grand Lake Theater District, Cleveland Heights, Montclaire etc. if you think Oakland is some giant thuggish ghetto.

Classic San Francisco ignorance...

Nineties Flava, your photos are amazing as awesome.

I have family in Temescal, Rockridge, and Lake Merrit so I know very well that Oakland has some nice areas. But the statistics don't lie, one doesn't have to do all that much research to see that clearly Oakland has a violent crime and gang (see: thug) problem. So much so, it even spills into SF sometimes with shootouts right outside of Westfield Mall or at the Pink Party in the Castro.

Really?

Oakland has a violent crime problem concentrated on very few neighborhoods. You're talking about a city of over 400k that you're writing off in one fell swoop. It's an American city, it's a major port city, does it have it's problems? Fuck yeah. Is it not the Paris of the US where only the rich douchebage elite can live (hint, it's named San Francisco), sorry, it's not. It's a real city, not a rich person's playground.

Read my first comment--Oakland is a great place full of great architecture, neighborhoods, etc. The crime is a downer, but the city is clearly headed for bigger and better things. Let's focus on the positive.

I live at Civic Center, and I see poverty, addiction, and crime on a daily basis. SF is not exempt. You're being ignorant by equating SF to only the upper 3rd of the city. It's not all The Marina or The Mission.

I like how your threads have become more about showing society rather than just buildings.

Cool pictures. It's always great to see Oakland on the forum.

I've been spending more and more of my free time in Oakland. I love riding my bike for miles and miles, just exploring the city, smelling the food cooking, listening to people talk. I find my main destinations tend to be Uptown, Grand Lake, Temescal, Adams Point, Fruitvale and even East Oakland (a friend bought a house out there).

The most interesting new restaurants and bars are now found in Oakland, and I find the whole scene is just so much more mellow and real than here in techie-douche-bro San Francisco. My partner and I agree that we will probably eventually move to Oakland, as several of our friends have already done so.

Nice thread! The people claiming Oakland is overrun with thug culture and that SF is nothing but a playground for the "rich douchebag elite" are dumb, but the pics are cool.
