^ Also one of mine. A personal addition...Coney Island, Brooklyn

Quote:
“Vision 2020 is a blueprint for the next 10 years and beyond that will change the way New Yorkers live for generations to come,”
Amanda Burden, the director of the Department of City Planning, said in October at a public hearing on the report’s recommendations.
She said that the goal was for the water to become the “sixth borough.”

“The water should become a part of our everyday lives,” Ms. Burden declared.

And what better place to bring home that point than iconic Coney Island, most famous of all the city shorefronts.

NOVEMBER 13, 2010

It was a nice springlike November day (we don't say that often), so I decided to check out the goings at Coney. The amusements have closed for the season,
but the boardwalk still serves as a draw. Also it was the last opening for a few of the boardwalk businesses, and one last grab at summer.

Some fun in the water...(no single clip)

That's true. Never been to NY but for now I've "explored" it a lot virtually. When you account all the several hundreds of kilometers of shoreline that the NY region has, you realize NY is easily the Metro Region with more kilometers of shoreline in North America. And not Only is very long but very varied as well, From the Hudson River, to both sides of the Long Island Sound, to the south coast of Long Island and the Jersey Shore you'll find sandy beaches, gorgeous harbors and coves in northern Long Island, the lovely towns and shores of Westchester Co at the Hudson, The imposing and beautiful Hudson Palisades in New Jersey, and much much more. The NY region may have more Km of beaches than LA or Miami, obviusly, the climate doesn't favor them as in those cities.

I've limited the shoreline photos to just the boroughs because it would be far too much to include the entire region.

Anyway, I'll be posting a lot more photos in this thread.
I strongly recomend you all, the amazing work that your counterpart in SSC (NYgirl) had done. She created and impresive series of threads, 170 of them, showing all the five boroughs of NYC and the inner metro area (Nassau County, Southern Westchester, Hudson County, Newark and southern Bergen County) with all the enormous diversity of neighborhoods there.
here's the link.

P.D. this is a very enjoyable thread

Thanks. That's exactly what I want to show here. But so much to get to
Maybe NYgirl will put some of those great photos here. The City and region are so diverse, much more to NY than the skyscraper canyons of Manhattan.
With so much waterfront, the emphasis here is on where the City meets the water, the neighborhood character.

I would never guess that was Brooklyn.
(except for the boat named Brooklyn VI, of course)

That's why I like posting these photos. There's a whole other side to New York that people never see (outside of the city of course).

Let's take a walk on the wild side....
I think it is pretty wonderful than in such a big and congested city, you still can find this spots of natural beauty.

All the pictures are taken from Panoramio, the link to the photos is above each one of them.

Believe it or not, this is Manhattan. This picture is taken from atop the the Inwood Hill Park, in the northern tip of Manhattan. Across the river the Hudson Palisades in NJ.

From the same park, in winter.

From down the Inwood Hill Park, near where the Hudson and Harlem river meet.

The Park. Unlike others in Manhattan, this park is largely natural, since it has not been very much landscaped. It is the only place in Manhattan where a large chunk of the original forest that once covered the island still remains.

From the other side of the river, in New Jersey. The green hill across the river is the Inwood Hill Park, from where the previous photos were taken. The arch bridge to the left is the Henry Hudson that links Manhattan and The Bronx. The buildings are in The Bronx

The Hudson shores down the palisades. This place is just across the northern tip of Manhattan. If you look well, there is the overexposed silohuette of the George Washington Bridge in the background.
