Here's a callback to my very first post, where I was wondering whether the Sisters of Charity school was L-shaped or rectangular.

Flyingwedge came up with a rather amazing photo of the building, with one arm of the "L" obviously removed.

So here's what I was ultimately after. Below is a very famous photo, reportedly taken in 1863. The clearest version I could find was at the Huntington, which is zoomable. (My cropped version isn't good as possible)

A circus-centric seller on eBay has slides of old discarded circus wagons stored on an unnamed property in Thousand Oaks.

Judging by the weeds the wagons have been all but forgotten (& haven't been moved in years)




The slides are all labeled. . .




Are there any noirishers from the Thousand Oaks area that knows where this place is/was located?

I grew up in TO(1960-1978), I was thinking they might be associated with Jungleland. The Oak treees won't be clue, there's a thousand of them.

Um, don't see a lake... The only lake around then with that much space around it was Lake Sherwood. I think the hills north of old TO match up much better. I think the pic was taken near Jungleland which is now the Center for Perforing Arts and City Hall. Here's a pic of those hills from about a 1/4 a mile east. This was taken during the 1974 Conejo Valley Days parade.

The other reason I think the area near Jungleland would make sense, is well, Jungleland.

From the Wikipedia entry for Jungleland...

Jungleland USA was a private zoo, animal training facility, and animal theme park in Thousand Oaks, California, United States, on the current site of the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza.[1] At its peak the facility encompassed 170 acres (69 ha).[2]

Louis Goebel created Jungleland in 1926 as a support facility for Hollywood. He had been employed at Universal Studios when the studio decided to close its animal facility. Five of the Universal Studio lions formed the nucleus of Goebel's collection.[3] The facility was originally called Goebel's Lion Farm and then Goebel's Wild Animal Farm.[4] Soon a wide variety of exotic animals were obtained, trained, and rented to the studios for use in films. The facility later became a theme park, opened to the public in 1929. Wild animal shows entertained thousands in the 1940s and 1950s. It was also featured prominently in an episode of the television show Route 66 (Season 2, Episode 31, "Hell Is Empty, All The Devils Are Here").

Ron Masak is a familiar name to me from TV in the 60's and 70's. (He's still working.) I looked up Love Thy Neighbor. IMDB said it started in the summer of 1973. Only 12 episodes were produced. Here's an interesting article about the show:

This is a great addition to NLA. I've been looking all over ebay and other sites for old circus photos....wagons too. A couple of famous clowns have lived in LA over the years. I remember a few on local TV back in the 1950s.

This blog has a copy of the "Tyrolian" photo, and what it says are other views of the house. But they don't resemble the photo you posted. I'm thinking this could be a "Winchester Mystery House" situation. One photo has an agave like the ones in your photo, only a few years older, with perhaps a radically altered house behind.

Yes, my memory is shot.


Here's an interesting snapshot just listed on eBay.




As you can see it shows a woman (tourist?) posing with a burro in front of the Temple Cafe.




Let's take a closer look. .....................- - - > per the sign on the right the cafe serves Steaks, Chops & Beer.



The burro appears to have an exclamation point above its head !


I am almost certain we have discussed the Temple Cafe on NLA but I don't recall the address.
When I went to look it up I only received two hits in the LA directories.
