These photos are taken from the San Francisco Historical Photograph Collection. They are two panoramic shots of the Richmond District taken off of Geary and around 30th Ave.

Here are some historic photos of Virginia City, which had around 30,000 people in the 1860s-1870s. It now has about 1500:

St John's Newfoundland.

All photos courtesy Geography Department, Memorial University of Newfoundland. All photos taken turn of the century or up to 1948. All pictures were taken pre-confederation, when Newfoundland was a Dominion under the British Crown, but also an an independent country.

Link to sight: http://www.library.mun.ca/qeii/cns/photos/#2.01 .

View of south side of Water Street and Sclater's Store, pre-1892

View looking west, Ayre and Sons to the left. Bus and parked cars
and horse drawn cart, c. 1948

1926, Water Street

New Gower Street, post 1892. That year a huge fire destroyed 1/3 of the city. Due to the enormous number of wooden pre firewall structures, many buildings were lost.

New Gower Street, west of Waldegrave Street, looking northeast, post-1892

View looking east, buildings, gas lamps, and chimney pots,
pre-1892

View from Roman Catholic Basilica towards the harbour, includes
the Congregational Church and Bee Orchid Cottages, c. 1905

Similar view today, taken be me in Nov. 2007

View looking up Garrison Hill from Queen's Road

View from the roof Newfoundland Hotel looking up Military
Road, includes streetcar tracks, c. 1925

View of eastern end of waterfront from railway track, includes
wharves, buildings and houses, pre-1892

View of the west end of harbour from the Southside - plus

View of the west end of harbour, detailed area around the drydock

View of the Narrows and Lower Battery with a Red Cross liner

View of harbour and St. John's from Signal Hill, post-1925

Similar view taken be me in Dec, 2007

Sutherland Place, King's Bridge Road

Until 1948, Newfoundland drove on the left!

I found all these photos in the entire thread submitted by everyone fascinating! Hope you liked the photos. Luckily, a very large amount of heritage buildings still survive today, alas post 1892.

^Thanks for posting those of St. John's, MUN has a great collection.

http://www.library.mun.ca/qeii/cns/photos/geog100.php

One of the differences you can't see in the old photos is that pretty much all the houses used dark colours then, mostly red, green & gray; now brighter colours are used.

Here is a link to a site containing old postcards from St. John's, and many North American and other cities:

somewhere between downtown and midtown st. louis, mill creek valley-all gone except for the train station at the hand of drunken bulldozers and thrilling modern ideas. just a couple square miles.

cancer begins, you can see pruitt igoe in the upper left, downtown is beyond the top of the photograph.

the core of the crescent of mid 19th century tenements around downtown st. louis was destroyed in a year, the rest would soon fall, with the exception of its southern outskirts...soulard-

^^^^Albany NY did that with Empire state Plaza. But instead of public housing, this was the State Gov't.

Pictures here from the 1910s, 20s and 30s.
All pictures c.Walter P. Reuther Library, Wayne State University.

Detroit around the end of WWI:

The Majestic Building, 1896
This D. H. Burnham building was the tallest for a little over ten years. It was torn down for a modern office building in the 60s.

These next two are in my home town of Windsor Ontario, in and around the Detroit ferry landing. These happy Americans are in search of 4.4 Beer which was being introduced in May of 1925 in Ontario, nearly eight years before repeal in the States. Two years later all restrictions were lifted.

Just around the corner, and to the right...

Ford plant and Hiram Walker distillery side by side on the Walkerville and Ford City waterfront, 1930s.
The distillery was up and running again after WWI prohibition of non-essential goods, and was allowed to continue to export whiskey out of Ontario. Guess where most of it went.

And Detroit. The tunnel is under construction but the Guardian Building appears to be topped out so this would have to be 1929 or 1930.
