i'm obsessive-compulsive when it comes to examining the masonry work in cities thanks to st. louis. i think a lot of german immigrants to st. louis (who built massive swaths of the city) brought a sort of red brick gothic asthetic common in northern germany.
it's interesting that the areas of the city that were built by irish and italian immigrants seem to be less red brick intense, like the hill and dogtown (both areas have lots of tan/creme brick, etc) and some of the old "american" built inner suburbs have almost no red brick and look more like neighborhoods in say, omaha or something.
