from what we gathered,at one time it was a mansion, now its a park...anyways it was getting late and low and behold a few blocks away was Christmas Tree Lane....
That was a great day..maybe you can add more info on the trucks wig-wag and i know someone knows more about the mansion...and last but not least this is the Picfair!
That would be the entrance to the Cobb Estate (ruins) built in 1918 by lumber magnate Charles H. Cobb. http://thenativelatourist.com/2011/0...s-cobb-estate/ This is also the entrance to the trailhead to Echo Mountain and the Mount Lowe Railway. I've hiked this area a few times; lots of history. It is located at the end of Lake Avenue in Altadena.

The truck looks to be a 1949 Chevy but it is not carrying the LATL logo and the resolution of the photo is not quite high enough to make out the lettering on the cab.
Here's what the Herald Express trucks looked like in 1960. The picture shows a couple of their circulation drivers receiving safety awards.

LAPL

Pictures of the Herald Express building on Georgia Street seem a bit thin on the ground. This one is dated January 8, 1947. The caption reads, "Firemen are shown pouring streams of water onto the broken gas main in a desperate effort to prevent the escaping gas from exploding."

LAPL

And this one shows the same incident looking south towards Pico. The streetcar barn is off to the right.

LAPL

Speaking of the streetcar barn, the caption for this 1946 picture describes it as "nearly empty (before the strike)". LAPL also has a follow-up "Today" picture showing the barn nearly full, but it's covered in lines and arrows for cropping the photo.

LAPL

I came close to this area when I identified the Dorothy Apartments in post #20619. Here's another close-up from the same aerial view I used in that post. It looks like the streetcar barn has had its tracks replaced with tarmac and is being used as a parking lot for buses.

Detail of picture at USC Digital Library

To show how the area has changed, this aerial is from 1948.

Historic Aerials

The Convention Center now sits squarely on the old streetcar barn. I've kept the original street locations on this 2004 aerial.

After seeing e_r's earlier post with pictures of the Los Angeles City Market in 1910, I had a look for pictures of 9th and San Pedro. What I found was the 9th and San Pedro Branch of the Pacific Southwest Bank in 1924.

USC Digital Library

I'm guessing that this picture shows the bank's staff (the description doesn't say).

USC Digital Library

Here's the interior.

USC Digital Library

We have another survivor. I wonder if that description applies to the interior.

An old Playa del Rey home

Blogger Cal Porter grew up in Surfridge in a house at Rindge and Epinard that has been lost to LAX. He posted this photo on his blog:

Cal Porter's Then and Now -- http://www.localbeachhotels.com/defa...r1=View&var2=1

Since Rindge runs near the top of the dunes parallel to and east of Vista Del Mar, I figured "below us on Vista Del Mar" meant at or near VDM and Epinard.
I never saw the Dr. Boyce house in another photo, so I guessed that it had been replaced before all the houses in that area were taken out.

Then I saw this c. 1924 photo of Playa del Rey beach. The house above the dark tent I recognized as the still-standing ex-Fritz Burns house at 200 Waterview.
But the house to its left also looked familiar, like it might be the Dr. Boyce house (look at the guy peeking out of the black tent!):

USCDL -- http://digitallibrary.usc.edu/cdm/si...id/2997/rec/16

Then I did a bit of triangulating and figured that the house to the left of the Burns house in the c. 1924 photo is at 7324 Vista Del Mar Lane (originally
just Vista Del Mar); below, it and 200 Waterview are marked with crude arrows. (Rindge is above Vista Del Mar Lane; Epinard was several blocks south):

Bing

A balcony and patio have been enclosed, and the two narrow garage doors have become one wider door, but 7324 Vista Del Mar Lane is the old Dr. Boyce
house. The LA County Assessor indicates the house was originally built in 1925 (and has not changed hands since 1978):

GSV

P.S. Great work HossC and GW on your recent house IDs!

Graybeard's post which seems on target. The coveralls worn by the photo's subject are reminiscent of a flying suit. Same with possible headgear and goggles. Garb could also be for warm-weather skiing, but Wallace was known for taking to the sky in his own planes.

Nice find GW (4032 Wilshire)

Another "amazing" discovery? After a harrowing civil defense demonstration - try Maxwell House. The dangers of acid reflux? Ties and protective eye wear optional.

I couldn't help but notice the old Hotel Northern in the background.

http://www.onbunkerhill.org/

The hotel opened on Jan. 13, 1913 at 420 W. 2nd Street. (at Clay Street)
It featured 10 floors, 200 rooms with baths.

Using this as a reference:

Where was the civil defense man demonstrating his extinguisher in Tourmaline's 1953 photo?

Here perhaps?

He was next to the Fashion League Building (formerly the Union League Building). The picture below is dated 12/20/56. The Huntington Digital Library also has several pictures showing its demolition in early '57.

This picture is dated 6/25/69. The sad description just says "The Northern Hotel now vacant and ready for wreckers."

This is very intriguing.

So the building they're loading the scrips from would be a printing company. (I'm a little confused)
Anyone recognize the writing above the door? -also, notice the missing bricks..what gives?

I wasn't able to find a 1933 Los Angeles Clearing House Certificate, but here's one from 1907.

http://auction.archivesinternational...Note_i16209324

So how does a Clearing House Certificate work? Why use this instead of money...what's gained from doing so?

...sooo many questions.

The NBC Studios on Sunset & Vine, as well as the Sunset & Vine area, has been featured in many posts on NLA.

I know this photo of the lobby mural has been posted before:

LAPL

I have also mentioned before that I’ve been looking for a color photo of the mural and, so far, no luck. It was painted by Ed Trumbull, while in his fifties, and it appears he painted many other murals in public buildings in San Francisco, Chicago and Philadelphia, among others, including the mural on the ceiling of the iconic Chrysler Building in New York City. (It was painted on canvas and cemented to the ceiling!) There’s also many photos of the murals, in color, too. That’s probably due to the fact that they are all still around. But, in my opinion, in the twenty-five year existence of the NBC Building, someone must have taken a photograph of this mural in color!

It dawned on me the other day that I have seen very few photos of this mural at all besides the one above. There’s more photos of Elizabeth Short, even one posted by E_R in front of this building! (Perhaps tourists or visitors were not allowed to take photos in the lobby?) I also have not discovered much at all written about this mural. (Does it have a name/title?) His other murals all have names and I haven’t even come across that bit of information about this one. I’ve even begun to wonder if the mural was painted in color at all, which might be why no one thought of taking a color photo of it. Perhaps?

Does anyone have any ideas where I could research this further, as I seem to run into a lot of brick walls while doing so. I admit feeling like I must be doing something wrong to keep being thwarted in this endeavor. Maybe NBC feels guilty for having destroyed this beautiful building and it’s lobby mural and has tried erasing it’s legacy, heh!

Although I looked up many many posts on NLA, I don’t pretend that the following photos of the building have not been posted here before. They’re all a little different than the head-on or corner views, so I thought I’d post them.

Nattily dressed and carefully coiffed, the two of them have just attended a live broadcast of Tom Breneman's "Breakfast in Hollywood" program across Vine, and have come over to see about tickets to "This Is Your Life."

Here’s the building looking west from Sunset Boulevard and Argyle Avenue (c. 1942):

Here’s a photo at the corner edge of NBC looking northwest up Vine Street. The shops in the center across the street from left to right include: part of the Tropics restaurant, the Globe Investment Company (1529 Vine Street), the Health Spot Shoe Shop (1531 Vine Street), the Travelknit Shop (1533 Vine Street), Ambassador Florists Inc. (1535 Vine Street) and the Hollywood Recreation Center Bowling Alley (1539 Vine Street). (c.1939):

Here’s a look down the rest of Vine to Sunset, starting from the “parking sign” in the photo above. You can see the full “Tropics” on Vine across the street:

Edward Trumbull, American artist (1884 - 1968)

Edward Trumbull was born in Michigan and raised in Connecticut. He attended the Art Students’ League of New York and studied in London under the noted muralist, Frank Brangwyn. Trumbull’s style as a muralist was traditional, and he was best known for his ease of bright and varied colors. A long time resident of Pittsburgh, Trumbull painted panels for the Heinz Administration Building in Pittsburgh and used “The Three Rivers” that converge at the city as the theme for the ceiling of the lobby of the Chrysler Building in New York. Two of his murals, located in the South Office building of the Pennsylvania Capitol Complex, are smaller versions of the murals he painted for buildings in Pittsburgh.
