This is just plan bad news regarding the cap and trade scheme. 68% oppose the gas tax increase based on that poll (probably an overestimate since the PC's have a nearly 20-point lead in the same poll, but even if off by 10 points that is still strong opposition).

Yet even with the nearly 20 point deficit, the Liberals may still form government since their support is much more concentrated.

This finding:
Quote:
Asked specifically about the cap-and-trade system, 59 per cent disapproved with 27 per cent approving and 14 per cent not having an opinion.
is inconsistent with other polls, which show about two-thirds specifically approving cap and trade.

Forum's other question, asking specifically about the effect on gas prices, which shows 68% opposition, may be accurate, but the one about cap-and-trade specifically is offside results from more credible pollsters.

How can you believe a poll that shows 51% in Northern Ontario support the PCs!!!!! What a joke!

Also look at the gender difference for PC support. It's just like the polls done during the recent federal campaign. Lots of grumpy old men are willing to participate in those telephone polls.

I'm looking forward to Mainstreet's next poll. They're a lot more trustworthy than Forum.

At the PC Party convention today, Brown confirmed his party supports putting a price on carbon! Apparently, reaction from the delegates was poor--in the words of the Toronto Star,
Quote:
The line drew lukewarm applause and a shout of “no” from one vocal skeptic and some groans in a crowd that came to its feet several times during the 26-minute address.
He later said he wanted his carbon pricing policy to be "revenue neutral" and not "a cash grab", with specifics to come. With that stance, the end result will probably be maintaining the cap and trade system adopted by Wynne, but with the revenues used to fund tax cuts instead of further emissions reductions initiatives. This will compromise the environmental effectiveness of the policy and somewhat ruins the point, but will probably appeal well to the base and to a reasonable number of more centrist voters.

One thing the Liberals did manage to do was split the NDP on the vote. The urban NDP MPP's all voted in favour of the carbon bill, while their Northern Ontario MPP's raced out of the Legislature - likely wanted to vote against it but would have faced punishment (even though it passed 63-24 so 63-30 or so would have made no difference in the end result, their wrath from the GTA supporters was going to be enormous).
