The Origins of Noir

Interesting article on the origins of Noir and "In a Lonely Place:"

The movie version is terrific, BTW.

Hoss, thanks so much for the follow-up on The Abbey boarding house.
I was beginning to think no one found that truly amazing photograph interesting. You restored my faith.

Behind the arched bridge in #5 is the same school as in the foreground of the photo below, so #5 looks south across
Washington Boulevard at the Grand Canal in Venice.

This "mysterious" image may far removed from LA but maybe not. The accompanying text speaks for itself.

This image from an old postcard has lately turned up, and more than the other "Motor Car Mysteries", leaves me scratching my head. The first description that comes to mind is simply: "precarious". Whatever prompted this unweildy arrangement certainly was out of the ordinary. The only reason that I can fathom that would have led SP to risk #7 above the fathoms was that there was an urgent need to supply a weather-isolated portion of an Oregon coastal branch with local transportation. Whatever the case, the car made it back to terra firma, as it was laid aside in 1920 along with a good number of its 55' McKeen mateys.

I'm hoping someone can locate the address for this one.

"Lampman House, Central Santa Monica Ca" [1915] (I'm not sure what the seller means by 'central' Santa Monica)

found on ebay quite awhile ago

It's a great pic even without the address.

(obviously it's 85 something...unless that's the neighbor's mail box)

_
I find the Lampman family located at 1728 20th St in Santa Monica. They appear there in 1918, 1920, 1928 and 1933.

John Smith Lampman was born in New York in 1853, his wife Sarepta (Rose) in Wisconsin in 1859 and son Claude in Minnesota in 1888. John and Serepta were married in 1873. Before coming to California, John Lampman was a policeman in Minnesota. Mr. Lampman was a salesman in a bakery in 1920, his wife, Sarepta, was a nurse for a private family and the son Claude was a motion picture actor. Claude appeared in one movie, apparently, "A Siren of the Jungle" a short film produced in 1916. He may have gone on to work as a costumer in the motion picture industry. They had four other children, Frank, Myrtle, Clara and Ida, all born before Claude.
John Lampman is listed in the Santa Monica Voter registration in 1922 as being employed as a watchman. By 1930 his wife is listed as Rose in the census, but since she was born in the same year in the same state, it appears that she just changed her name to Rose from Sarepta ( No wonder) She died in 1921 and John Lampman died in 1935. Both are buried in Forest Lawn, Glendale.

There are pictures of both John and Rose on Ancestry.com. The picture of John was taken when he was a policeman, wearing his uniform and badge.
I have no explantation of the "85" on the mailbox, maybe that can be someone else's mystery.

from Shorpy....

"For Aunt Annie, Compliments of Mayme". My grandmother had this photo of a boarding house in Los Angeles in her photo collection.
I suspect the photo was given to her grandmother, but I never heard any stories about the photo - I first saw the photo long after she died.
Taken by "Mr. B. Howard, View Photographer, 147 South Main St., Los Angeles CAL. I managed to figure out the location using clues in the picture.
"

http://www.shorpy.com/node/6174?size=_original

"The address on the building is 232; the sign behind it for the "City of Paris" store suggests this is 232 S. Hill St.
The gothic building behind and to the right would be the old City Hall. This site would have been a block from the Angel's Flight train up Bunker Hill.

There's lots of photos of the old mansions of Bunker Hill that got converted into boarding houses, then flop houses, and finally torn down by the 1950's.
I suspect this one disappeared sooner than others because it was in downtown proper."
__
Y'all might have seen it on my site:

http://web.csulb.edu/~odinthor/socal8.html

The owner of the photo (a family descendant) contacted me a medium number of years ago with the photo, and essentially said that he'd be delighted if I'd be delighted to add the pic to my site. Well, I was delighted, and so he was delighted. And we all lived happily ever after.

I don't believe I have posted this photo.

From what I can tell, a driving school is using the parking lot of this May Co. (Eastland Center in West Covina)

found in an old file of mine

Anyone know what the uniquely shaped building with the lattice-type roof is (in the far distance)

I'm off until Wednesday afternoon. Have fun everyone!

That photo is on flickr with the subtitle "Car club setting up early in morning for car show in 1962". I believe that the same account, A Box of Pictures, answers the question about "the uniquely shaped building with the lattice-type roof". It was a Huddle restaurant, seen here in 1958. It's still visible on the 1980 view at Historic Aerials, but gone by 1994. The site is now occupied by TGI Fridays.

Possibly a car show, but I doubt it. I competed in and organized a large number of time/speed/distance rallies in the sixties (I was president of the college sports car club), and this sure looks like the start of a TSD rally to me.

Cheers,

Earl

That's Musso's Parisian Garden restaurant at 6300 Wilshire in the background. Is the little village part of Musso's?

The McKeen photo has just shown up on a railroad enthusiasts site with the following information:SP McKeen Car #7 was on its way to Coos Bay from San Francisco on the SS Adeline Smith in this December, 1913 photo.

The date is being questioned as the Coos Bay line didn't open to through traffic to Eugene until 1916.

Cheers,
