Most of the city likely hadn't. The mosque is in a business/industrial park up in the NE, surrounded on 3 sides by massive warehouses (belonging to Flextronics I believe), and a park on the other. Its barely visible from any major roadway in the area except for the minaret which shows partially. It is a good site based on the fact the land was likely relatively cheap, but from what I know of that particular group it fits their needs fairly well. Most of their members in Calgary live in the communities surrounding it, so its relatively accessible for them.

I'm going to be up in that area this afternoon, so I may see if I can grab a better shot of it from the hill in Westwinds Park, that should also show a bit of its surroundings as well

Yes, Flex leases the warehouse, but not for too much longer. The mosque borrowed our parking for the week for the opening. But it is about a 10-min walk from McKnight-Westwinds LRT as well.

I would guess that awareness is low in general and met by apathy where it does exist. Like other posters already pointed out, it is located in an out of the way industrial park near the airport.

I think Calgarian's don't care very much at all. Calgary has both a charter (government funded) and private Islamic school, and a bunch of mosques from Sunni, Shia, Ismaili, and Ahmadiyya communities. Calgarian's despite a media image to the contrary, perhaps deserved from much earlier years, don't really care what religion anyone is, and whatnot.

Everyday I drive or transit by the Calgary Islamic Centre (Sunni) which was built in 1978.

The Ismaili community in Calgary, quoted in this article as 11,000 strong host a big Stampede Breakfast.

their not real muslims according to muslims

kinda weird

the mosques in surrey are not too nice

one is housed in a building in a light industrial/office/shop/retail complex - kinda weird no one would know its a mosque

another one is housed in an old christian church -which looks too small to house them

The mosque here is in an old church too I think, it's very nondescript. More visible than our Synagogue though. We only have about 100 Jews. They meet at some guys house or something. Haha.

It's huge, by North American standards; about 5% of Calgary is Muslim.

I'm sure the general population is fine with it, but most don't care one way or the other. Calgary is very secular.

Well, I'm pretty sure Cambridge doesn't even have a synagogue. That's one minority that just barely exists here. That, and natives for some reason. We do already have 3 mosques though (for a pop of 125,000), so it doesn't surprise me that the much larger city of Calgary can support a giant one.

Yes, it's called Thunder Bay Masjid (I know, very original!) They have a website -- http://www.tbaymuslims.com. It never works though. It's posted on the sign.

I can't see why any reason the general population would ahve any issue. The city's Sikh Dashmesh Cultural Centre isn't too far away from this new mosque either.

I live in the area, and I don't have any problem with them.

Their old mosque used to be on Mission Road SW, it was in a small old church that has since been torn down.
I wish them all the best in their new centre.

Any news on the lawsuit filed by the developers a few months back? Apparently the owners, if they can be called that, didn't pay the remaining 2 or so million they owed the developers. Was on the news then, but no word since.

Hadn't heard about this and it would be neat to have in Calgary. I hope they use quality construction materials as this would be cool to have. I don't even think Edmonton has any mosques. GOOD on Calgary!

Does anyone have any good picture set of the Ahmadiyya Mosque including inside areas? Have been by there some time ago, it is one awesome looking building. The Calligraphy along the top of the building is very sharp and isn't really over the top. Wish the location was better though.
