St. Louis had a smog problem, relying heavily on cheap, soft coal from Illinois and sited in a valley...

Midtown, 1929. I wasnt really paying attention to the date but this appears to be a bank run. Lines would form going the other direction for the theatres, so I wasnt really paying much attention.

Midtown, 1935. St. Louis developed a couple downtown-like nodes, presenting a fairly heavy corridor of development from the river to Forest Park. This is about 3 miles from the river.
