Thank you, all!
Istanbul is a fascinating and electric city full of surprises and very unique in character/feeling. I highly recommend it to any lover of cities, history, and culture. Even after getting tear-gassed 7 times, it was hard for me to hate or malign the city. The traffic and vastness of the city can be problematic, though. Strangely enough, I felt Turkish food in my Turkish neighborhood in Berlin was multitudes better than all but 1 or 2 of my meals in Istanbul.
That said, Istanbul is a true crossroads in every sense of the word. I just hope the ongoing demolitions/development, shifting conservatism and religious mores, and growth of political Islam don't change the place for the worst. At least not any more than it already has. But with Turkish Airlines offering reasonable rates to the city from all of the US, Europe, Africa, Asia, Middle East, etc., it is now easier than ever to visit. Cheers!
