Stainless Steel Skin Appears on Rogers Place

Quote:
Rectangular stainless steel panels are beginning to be installed alongside the building's existing curvilinear glass.

...these sheets, which are most likely wrapped in a protective blue coating to avoid any damage associated with the ongoing construction of the building. Renderings for the project indicate a more traditional stainless steel grey look, with some blue accents at ground level. Though construction has already been a sight to behold, the cladding's sleek and contemporary aesthetic will surely invite new architecture enthusiasts and photographers to the site.

Oilers fans brave the cold, ‘revelling in the experience’ of Rogers Place tour
MARTY KLINKENBERG
EDMONTON — The Globe and Mail

Mustaches frozen and steam billowing with each breath, more than 1,000 fans waited patiently to get their first look at Edmonton’s downtown hockey arena. Wearing mittens and balaclavas and Oilers jerseys and ski jackets, they laughed in the face of winter, and even danced in line at one point as they stood outside Rogers Place in Saturday’s -30 C temperatures.

McFaul was previously director of engineering and maintenance for BC Place Stadium, where he was responsible for venue operations including the retractable roof.,

Before that, he was director of facility operations for CenturyLink Field in Seattle, home to the National Football League’s Seattle Seahawks and the Seattle Sounders of Major League Soccer.

McFaul will oversee Rogers Place plant operations, building maintenance, conversions, ice plant, ice maintenance and operations, engineering, groundskeeping, housekeeping and building system operations.

The cladding reflects sunlight very interestingly.

The wrap is off on much of the stainless steel cladding now!

Arena's shadow looms large over downtown Edmonton's homeless

Edmonton Journal

Sitting in the shadow of cranes and curved concrete, Keith Brighteyes wonders what life will be like downtown for the homeless when the dazzling $480-million Rogers Place arena opens this fall.

“I believe we are being forced to move into a different area,” Brighteyes said recently, sitting in Edmonton’s busiest drop-in centre, Boyle Street Community Services. “They don’t want all the riff-raff.”

Mindful of the project’s transformative effect downtown, the Oilers Entertainment Group has already delivered some benefits for those who live nearby. But some critics worry that a subtle but powerful pressure will force many of the low-income people out.

“Historically, change is not kind to my clients,” said Jared Tkachuk, one of three social workers employed by the Edmonton Public Library to work with the homeless population. “It usually means they’re going to be at the bottom end of it.”

Arena Coummunity Benefits Meeting #7

-900 daily workers
-on track for Sept 2 turnover
-expect 'multiple' opening events that cater to a range of tastes
-Community Rink programming (subject to change) to have morning public skates 3 times a week, a couple of midday parent tots and or senior skating as well as 1-2 drop ^in shinny as well as rentable market ice slots.
-summer programming likely to include hockey schools
-Transportation/pedestrian plan well underway, complicated as heck and difficult with so much active construction until 2019.
-bus, taxi areas being worked on, likely directly north on 102-103st
-Large surface lot where Bacarat is currently proposed to be temporary surface, future development phase.
-Metered parking can/likely will vary on event versus non event nights.
-Free after 6pm likely on the way out or modified
-Meters likely to allow more than 2 hours max or could provide some areas of shorter term parking
-Comm Leagues still have serious concerns over residential parking issues, but The City is working on these and current trouble spots.
-overall another productive evening given just how complex this is.

Rexall sale

'The deal represents a final divestment from the health sector for privately held Katz, owner of the Edmonton Oilers hockey team. Katz said it will now focus its money and attention on real estate development, sports and entertainment, and its private and public investments.'
