The Crystal Palace
Constructed as part of the Great Exhibition of 1851, the original Crystal Palace was a 564m long building ahead of its time, being constructed from iron and volumes of glass not seen previously.
Following the Great Exhibition, the Palace was moved from its original Hyde Park (Central London) site to Sydenham in south London to become an exhibition centre of objects from across the globe and various interests such as the first motor show. It even holds the honour of the first building with public toilets! The dominance of the building eventually led to the surrounding area taking on the name of the structure, and its legacy lives on through the local football team, railway station and surrounding neighbourhood. Unfortunately in 1936 a giant fire decimated the site and all that remains are the foundations and surrounding parkland.
Recently however a Chinese billionaire has sought to rebuild the Crystal Palace which would incorporate a hotel, conference facility, studios and galleries. The surrounding parkland would also be returned to its original Victorian appearance. Recently a tender was issued for architects from across the globe to submit their interest in the project.
