Clybourn is one of the very few streets that has protected bike lanes and is four lanes at its widest. It is far from an auto sewer especially relative to many other arterial roads, and that's coming from someone who's violently anti-car.
EDIT: I should also add that it does seem desolate but that's because it runs through industrial and run down areas and just doesn't have much attractive development around it yet. The existing mix of buildings is pretty evenly split between going to the lot line and suburban strip malls, so there's definitely hope. The most pleasant stretch is around New City but that's because of the development not the street itself.
