Exactly. I don't even get what the problem is. On-street parking in Downtown London and Toronto is double that rate, and you won't find free parking 1-2 blocks away. If I remember correctly, Ottawa is even more.

People walk further to get to Walmart or the mall than they do when they park downtown. It's got to be some sort of weird mental block that has to do with the environment they're in. Almost as if, if they can't see the front entrance to where they're going, they don't feel comfortable parking there, even if it is much closer than where they would park at a mall.

That's very true. Last night I headed to downtown Kingston to meet some friends at Tim Hortons, and I parked one block away. I realized that although I didn't park right at Tim Hortons, it was still closer than if I had gone to Loblaws and had to walk across the parking lot.

Best of all, parking is free in the evening in Kingston. Now that's something the complainers conveniently forget.

That massive hole that's been sitting there for years is finally seeing something in it. Nice affordable condos, starting from the $120s.

Also, the abandoned church at Queen & Clergy is being incorporated into a condo development that will take up much of that block.

This one's more on the pricy side, they're luxury units.

Great condo for Kingston! Is that near the water?

It's a few blocks west of the waterfront, though if you get an east-facing unit you will have a great view of the water and Royal Military College.

There's a 2nd Walmart proposed for Kingston, in the northeast end along Division Street just south of the 401. There is an existing Walmart located near the Cataraqui Centre in the city's northwest.

While there is unmet demand for clothing, especially childrens' clothing in Kingston's northeast, this is the last thing Kingston needs right now. Downtown, though it is still doing very well compared to other Ontario cities, has seen a spike in commercial vacancies over the past year, due largely to massive rent increases from property owners. As Division/401 is a lot closer to downtown than the Cataraqui Centre, this could be devastating to downtown.

So far, the only media outlet that has reported this (CKWS-TV) aired a highly biased report that championed this development and didn't even mention downtown, and their online poll has 67% of respondents in favour of the Walmart.

Crane operator is stuck at the tip of the crane. Hope he's rescued shortly.

I live four blocks from where this fire took place. The houses behind me were without power last night and they were in the evacuation zone for part of the evening, though it was the first area to be re-opened to residents. My street never got evacuated though power and Internet went off intermittently.

Anyone familiar with the Kingston Frontenacs would remember that they used to play at the Memorial Centre prior to 2008; the street along the west side of the arena was part of the initial evacuation zone.

And now the delicate process of bringing down the crane is going on.

Crane down safely, and as of sometime yesterday, Princess Street is finally open to traffic again. It was closed for a full week, although parts of it further from the fire site had opened earlier. Of course, complicating matters was the two-day ice storm, though Kingston wasn't hit as hard as the Toronto area.

663 Princess is back under construction. Also prep work for reconstruction of Princess Street between Bath & MacDonnell has started. It will be a big improvement to the streetscape, with wider sidewalks, bike lanes, trees, and the courtesy crossing replaced with a proper pedestrian crossing.

My only gripe is the fact that they aren't including queue-jump lanes at intersections for the Express buses. That section of Princess is very slow and it would really help the Express to be able to bypass the congestion.

Also, I posted this in the transit fantasies section of the Canada forum:

My dream for expanding the Express network Basically the same as the currently planned Express route network, but with proper stations instead of bus shelters, and a fourth route added in to allow for service along John Counter as well as Montreal-Rideau express service.

I swapped the Montreal-Rideau & Division sections--having Express 2 (orange) follow Montreal-Rideau and my proposed Express 4 (brown) following Division. I did this to enable direct service between Queens and the bus terminal.

There's a highrise under construction behind Innovation Park, northeast of Princess and Concession Streets. It's been coming along well, I don't have photos of it though.

The damage from the big fire is still very visible. The Legion Villa next door to the fire site still has Christmas decorations up at the entrance, seemingly frozen in time since December. It has been under extensive renovation and will eventually reopen. On the other hand, the Howard Johnson Hotel and attached bar haven't been touched since the fire, and is a massive eyesore.
