Definitely late 80's to early 90s as you can see the Delta Center under custruction.

It looks like the glass on Energy Solutions Arena are being installed in the picture, so I assume the picture was taken in 1990-91 since ESA opened in 1991.

I just noticed that there is some scaffolding on the NW side of the temple.

The reason for that is back in the 90's the LDS Church sand blasted the outside of the temple to clean off years of dirt that had collected on the granite.

Awww yeah. I've wondered how that thing has stayed clean.

This has been on my mind for a while. we all know that there is a big 7.0 earthquake coming to SLC. Is the temple going to be able to withstand such a thing? Could it possibly collapse?

I am guessing spring of 91, my sister got married in June of 91 and the scaffolding had moved to the east side by then, and ESA(DC) started construction in May of 90, so it would figure it would have taken them a year to get to that point of construction.

Here is another photo from the same guy:

You can see scaffolding on the Joseph Smith Memorial Building, but that really doesn't help because it was renovated until 1993. You can also see some scaffolding on the LDS Temple. So...

The sad thing is that view hasn't changed much (the one posted originally):

We really need to get going on that area. It's pathetic.

It's cool to see both the (old) Salt Palace and the Delta Center in the same shot. It's my great regret that I never saw a Jazz game at the Salt Palace, i started following the Jazz in 1991.

Maybe it hasn't changed much in skyscrapers but it actually has changed quite a bit if you ask me. The entire Gateway has since been built with several office buildings, and a hotel, along with condo/apartment buildings, and even though it's on the edge of the picture a six story hotel has been replaced by 30 story condo building. I'd say that's some serious change, with more occurring as we speak.

There is also the hotel developments to the South of ESA and the residential to the west of the Gateway along 5th West, 6th West and North Temple bound by I-15 on the west.

That is just the changes since the most recent picture has been taken.

Looking at it, the picture is probably what 2 years old at best? I think that the view has changed a lot in just that short time period. Hopefully it keeps changing over the next few years and then just imagine what it would look like in 20 years.

A photo I came across of Trolley Square... Interesting to see the former Beneficial Life Tower (now Key Bank) under construction.

I just wanted to use that.

That's a great image...I can just imagine the Skyscraper Page Forum back then nerding out over it: "26 stories ZOMG" and then several people saying "ugh but a few more floors we could have had a new tallest" and "there's an ordinance saying nothing can be taller than the COB" and "no, that's a myth" and then someone saying "your mom's a myth!" and then they all got banned.

Good thing the internet wasn't around yet.

SLC in the 1800's

So I was looking around for some classic photos when I came across these...

Ox carts in Salt Lake City in the 1860s.

1860s, looking northwest from the Salt Lake Theatre.

The first train to Salt Lake City, which ended the long arduous trek across the plains, arrived in 1870

There's this cool new site, http://www.whatwasthere.com/ that overlays historic photos onto Google Maps, so essentially you get a Street View of historic sites where they were located. So far the SLC selection is pretty slim, but I can see myself mining the State History photos and adding them to the site.

I like it.

Here are a couple videos of downtown I found.

http://youtu.be/vj_fbmEq5Ts

http://youtu.be/1yHj-HdgpG0

The first is Utah in the 1950s. Skip to 1:29 for amazing shots of Main Street, 3:44 for Capital Hill, and 4:58 for the U of U campus and Main Street again.

The second is a news interview moments after the Hotel Newhouse demo. The clip contains several slow-motion street and bird-eye shots of the building going down; including a few nice skyline views. Skip to 0:29 , 3:12 , and 6:15 for the slowmo.

Saw this pic at a local antique shop. Thought I'd post it. Boy am I glad that parking garage on west temple is gone.

You can see the old facade on the Montgomery Ward building, what was eventually the Old Navy building (future 111)

Is that Eagle Gate under construction?

What is the building that is on the current Harmon's lot?

What's the poofy thing on top of the Crossroads mall?

I agree, Nordstrom is a much more appealing site than that old parking structure.
Yes that is Eagle Gate under construction.
Part of the Harmons site used to be a SLFD station. They closed it in the mid 90's and moved to a new station on 500 E and 200 S. The State St corner of Harmons was a short office building.
The poofy think on Crossroads I believe was tennis court, or basketball court. Yes for some reason they had a court on the roof of a mall.

That's a great picture. Look at how much has changed and is about to change, as far as highrises go, in just that picture. Key Bank Eagle Gate Tower, Gateway Tower West (Beneficial Life), 99 West, The Regent, Cascade, 111. While it wouldn't show up in this picture, this same shot could very well be taken from the CCH, if built on the RWP site.

The office building on the corner of 100 South and Main was a Key Bank. There was a branch in the bottom and offices above.
The Sports Mall had a downtown location on the roof of Crossroads Mall. They had tennis courts on the roof. Even though my family had a Sports Mall membership in Murray, we couldn't use the downtown location, so I never saw the courts or the gym.

Anyone know why the arena in the Salt Palace was called "Acord Arena"?
