Is this the tallest a tower can go in Calgary??? Or could they push this tower even taller?

It could probably go as high as a 1000' but that's not going to happen! There's a few Calgary forumers that really know the zoning for downtown and throughout the city, a few have indicated that there are a few spots in the core that could hold a 1000 footer.

They can go taller if they need to. It seems to be an issue of cost efficiency once you get over 50 some floors..... You need more elevators and it changes the whole design and economics of it. Likely the reason we have so many twins. Really, if they are planning a second 44 storey tower, then why not just build a bigger taller single tower? but unfortunately it's more economical to build a second shorter one.

Surreal: I don't know if I entirely buy the cost issue when it comes to an extra 10 floors on a 2 building project! Look at Livingston Place (a Waste IMO). What about the time and cost it takes to prepare a site (40-60 floors) and build it to grade? I would think that the differrence would be minimal, (on a percentage basis), especially when you're talking about a $500 million - 1 billion dollar project!

There most definitely can be a significant cost difference. Some items which can have a significant cost impact would be the need of a higher capacity MEP system; higher capacity fire detection system; redesign of the foundation in order to accept greater loads; changes to the strutural elements above the foundation in order to accept greater loads... ...just to name a few.

Also $500 million to $1 billion dollar is a 100% difference.

Shackman: 500mil - 1billion was the range in the total cost of the project.... I used it as an example! I'm well aware of the items you listed... and still I think the differrence may not be a cost breaker.

Also additional cost could have future implications during leasing. My previous post was based off of my experience as a cost analyst (estimator) in the construction industry. In addition, during my college years, I took a course in Real Estate Finance. I was very amazed how large of a difference a small increase can have on the bottom line.

I like taller and more variety skylines. On numerous threads, I have expressed my frustration for lack of variety and height. However, in most cases, there are legitimate reasons.

I have heard from numerous people at different times that the 50 -60 storey range is a cutoff point before the design needs big changes. It makes sens given all the twin towers around Calgary. If a building like EAP can lease out 92 floors of space, why not build a bigger, say 75 storey tower, but the costs per sq foot change in that scenario.

Yep! I'd really like a 75 story EAP (or anything else)!

Watched one of the two sheds drop off the old Herald Building. I was pulling my camera out of my backpack so I didn't get a shot of it falling. The second picture is after the dust clears.

Wow was that even intentional?

Seems like a rather reckless way to take it down.

It certainly looks intentional. Why not get gravity to do some of your work for you?
