[QUOTE=citywatch;7602819]He was one of the regulars to this thread who helped activate it during those various occasions when a lull developed. Not sure why he has since bowed out.

he sometimes could be quite down on LA....on dtla....& would be the opposite extreme of a booster who sees nothing wrong with the city. That struck me as ironic for a person dependent on, or seemingly enthusiastic about, taking pics of the city. But his photos always enlivened this thread nonetheless.

in the meantime, I'm quite relieved that one of the major gaps of dt has now been filled in....

Hunter has been awfully quiet of late I think it's because many people reacted very harshly to his opinions, myself included for which I am sorry. Blackcat, I believe that you are a personal friend of Hunter is he okay? Do you know why has he chosen to be so quiet?

He's fine. Head over to the DTLA development page on FB and he's all over it.

I do like his contributions and don't disagree with everything he said, but a LOT of what he says has an underlying hint of unfair contempt for the city of LA. That's what garnered the harsh reactions from some other forumers, which I agree is probably why he doesn't come here as often.

I had this coversaton before.

More cranes doesn't mean more skyscraper.
Los Angeles and New York have a way more going on.
Even people from Seattle said that this can't be correct.

But I am glad for all those cities.

They better include pedestrian pathways to break up that huge block, and add access to the park from that side if there isn't already.

Well I guess that kills any remaining chance of having music festivals at the park anymore.

They'll have gold line trains constantly traveling 5 feet from their windows. Would music combined with that really be so much louder?

LA made number 10 in "top 30 best cities in the world"
A "global" survey. I just think its funny. Not that I'm taking it serious. The list has some surprising ones as always.

Yeah the numbers are a bit skewed with the crane counts. I find it odd that every city in Texas and Miami is exempt from the map.

Its more of an engineering error. At the base of the spire is a pair of floodlights pointed straight up the length of the spire. What they didn't anticipate was the first ring on the spire itself completely stops the light from going past it and up along the spire. I hope they figure something out soon.

Far-sighted developer--please rebuild a much taller Richfield Tower

Not exactly the same, of course, but taller. 70-80 stories, with a 300 foot spire, maybe 1250' to the top of the spire (same as Empire State Building). Would fit in well on Pershing Square or Broadway as a mixed use building, office, residences, hotel, retail.

A real shame they tore it down in 1969 to put up the ARCO twins. Art Deco wasn't much appreciated in 1969.

The building was second to 454' City Hall in height (over 350' feet to the top of the spire) until they built the Occidental Insurance (now USC) Tower in 1965, and was a real landmark. Was visible for many miles on clear nights. Note the shape of the top is similar to the Empire State Building. Some say that the "airship mooring mast" of the ESB and the crown was inspired by the late 1920s Richfield design. Take a look:

I fondly remember the building from my childhood. Really spectacular lit up at night. A neo or retro Art Deco tower inspired by the Richfield (but completely modern inside) would fit in really well with all the historic 1920s buildings on Broadway. An instant landmark.

I imagine a lot of tiny little houses.

What's interesting to me about these renderings is the detail at the street level. If they're using stone for those first two levels on Figueroa, this is going to look really, really nice. If it's concrete, it'll end up looking like The Bloc.

The devil is always in the details...

Interesting observation... I would think they would go with higher end quality based on the rest of the project, but you never know.

Also, i think they did a pretty good job of breaking up the podium and making it look as organic to the street as possible. I honestly wish this project, the Luxe and Circa were already done. Its going to be such a drastic improvement

The Park Hyatt hotel/condo rendering looks sweet. It's amazing how that area is transforming. Now if only the Grand Avenue could be resurrected.
