Plans have been submitted for an office tower at 1400 Lavaca St. and public documents show that the developer is affiliated with South By Southwest. The property is described as a “corporate headquarters” in public records.
According to records at the city of Austin and the Texas Department of Licensing and Registration, CZ Properties intends to demolish the existing structure and build a $41 million, 12-story office tower.
So, the New Central Library was slated to have a grand opening this month. Curious about that, I just checked the website and now it says May 2017. Sighhhh. This construction project has been atrocious with delay after delay. The groundbreaking was in May of 2013! In what universe is it acceptable for a building this small to take 4 years to build?

Weird, but it does look really nice, glad it's wrapping up.
That's a great location also for the first of this type of store. It'll prove successful, I'm sure - and hopefully be an example for other neighborhoods as they develop.

Okay, so I'm gonna take a contrarian position and say that existing properties that already exhibit great street level interaction should be privileged slightly from redevelopment. I wonder if city officials could build an incentive to develop parking lots rather than existing structures into code? Say, an additional density bonus for lots that are currently non-structure impervious cover? That way, all else equal, development would be slightly redirected to empty lots.
That being said, I'm sure the replacement will be a hell of a lot better than what's there now, even if we loose a little bit of charm.

I would love to see Target close the dreadful store off i35 near Mueller, and build a new "City" target in the Mueller development with a parking garage.

I agree with this.
I also think they should build a city target in the East Riverside corridor.
Those are the three urban-izing areas in the city where that business model makes sense.

Work is under way on a $60 million, 17-story student housing tower on Rio Grande Street near the University of Texas campus, the latest in a series of residential projects being built or planned in the area.
The project, called Aspen West Campus, is going up at 1909 Rio Grande St. The developer is Aspen Heights Partners, an Austin-based firm, teaming with Grand China Overseas Investment Management Ltd.
The tower will have 166 units and 464 beds, and is expected to be completed by the fall of 2018.
