Stamford has a solid business district. You have to wonder how much denser it would have developed if it weren't separated from the waterfront by I-95.

^ that was all old industrial/port land. but hasn't stopped new highrises being built on the other side of 95, where there is still a ton of land available for multifamily

A sum up for dc_denizen's new pictures on page 117:
1. Toronto is catching up with Chicago and getting pretty close now;
2. Atlanta's highrise skyline really is decentralized, scattered from above, but it looks pretty harmonious from Stone Mount. Park, which makes Atlanta uniquely attractive, or attractviely unique.
3. Are those huge water towers really in use for residential water supplies in Nassau County, Long Island?

1. Not quite. Its impressive but significantly shorter on average. Of the 25 tallest building between the two cities, 17 are in Chicago.
2. Agree, it is a good looking skyline.

Note, I'd like to see that new aerial shot of San Francisco in higher def.

Why can't some people understand what an aerial photo is? It's not a picture of a skyline from a few floors up. It's looking DOWN on a city.

IE from air, not from the 10th floor.

I lived in Toronto for a couple of years as a kid. I love Toronto, though I don't know it all that well. That said, Toronto will never match the grandness of Chicago. Chicago, early in its existence, decided to create a monumental layout with a European, even Parisian feel to it. Wide thoroughfares with monumental buildings (museums and the like) placed at the end of them. Toronto, as a whole, is pretty much laid out as a simple grid. Toronto, and even my hometown Houston, will surpass Chicago in population in the not too distant future. Neither will ever, in my opinion, surpass the sheer "BIGNESS" of Chicago.

The Toronto city proper has already surpassed Chicago and more recent "Golden horseshoe" population figures are hard to find, but I am guessing on par with the population size of Chicagoland. The city populations are going in opposite directions and you can sense it when visiting both cities.

The Toronto metro has twice as many high rises as Chicago and arguably a more vibrant downtown. It is all perspective, but Chicago does not seem bigger than Toronto anymore to me....at all.

Yeah when I visited oak park, the west loop and drove from downtown to Evanston two years ago I really sensed a city in decline

Far more fun to hang out in north York on yonge and admire the high rises

This is the first time I make true apology on SSP, sorry for causing the confusion, when I said "Toronto is catching up with Chicago and getting pretty close now", I only meant "Toronto's skyline in that photo from that certain angle, is catching up with Chicago's and getting pretty close now".

I will consider carefully when I type next time.

Actually I thought it was pretty obvious you were talking about skyline and I was confused why someone brought up "grandness" and "big feeling." Overly defensive to the point of reacting without really thinking.

No need to apologize. It's hard enough to communicate effectively in writing. When it's online and, to some extent, in need of translation, it's almost impossible. I was just voicing my opinion that sheer numbers of buildings do not make a great city. I forget sometimes that this website is specifically about skyscrapers, less so about cities. If some people think that's being defensive, so be it.

I'm going to say these are technically aerial shots since they're not taken from other buildings. I wish these were larger:
