Work Resumes At 161 Maiden Lane, Aka One Seaport, Financial District

Construction in New York City can be a dangerous occupation, and unfortunately, Juan Chinchillo lost his life on September 21st, when he fell from 161 Maiden Lane, aka 1 Seaport. While the project has been on hold for two months while the Department of Buildings investigated, they have now partially lifted the stop-work orders imposed after the accident, and work appears to be resuming on the tower.
It will eventually stand 60 floors and 670 feet to its rooftop.
According to the Department of Buildings, as of November 17th, “WORK ALLOWED -ALL WORK UP TO 21FL / JUMPING HOIST ABOVE 21FL.”
While that means superstructure work still appears to be on hold, it is a hopeful sign that the tower’s upward momentum is imminently going to resume.
Fortis Property Group is the developer behind the project, and Pizzarotti LLC is building the tower. When complete, it will have just shy of 200,000 square feet of space, divided between 80 condominiums that will average about 1,700 square feet apiece. Hill West is the design and executive architect, while Groves & Co. will be leading work on the interiors.

The Department of Buildings removed all stop-work orders related to a death on the site, where Fortis is building an 80-unit condo tower, agency officials confirmed on Tuesday. All work was shut down at the project on Sept. 21, after worker Juan Chonillo fell from the building’s 29th floor. He was wearing a harness, officials said, but it wasn’t hooked onto anything.
The DOB lifted part of the order late last month, allowing all work below the 21st floor to resume. The agency rescinded the rest of the order on Monday, after the project’s contractor, Pizzarotti, corrected a series of “violating conditions,” according to DOB representatives.
These conditions included “inadequate netting, housekeeping issues and the unsafe use of the platform system where the fall occurred,” according to the DOB.
151 Maiden Lane is a good reference point to see where its at (total height to top-out) relative to 1 Seaport. I agree it still has somewhere around 1/2 to go.

Are those mini-rows of panes differently shaded or at different levels of translucency?

Work commenced in December on the 80-unit condominium tower planned for the site, several weeks after worker Juan Chonillo fell from the building’s 29th floor. Chonillo was wearing a harness, officials said, but it wasn’t hooked onto anything.
On Jan. 8, netting was on the 24th floor while work was being done on the 30th. The DOB issued a partial stop-work order that lasted for eight days, according to agency representatives. The site was hit with another on January 23, due to work on the 32nd floor while netting was only in place on the 26th and the 27th floors. The order was lifted two days later.
Projects that rise at or above six stories or that are taller than 75 feet require horizontal netting, according to the city’s building code. The netting must be placed within two stories or 30 feet of work being done.
