The East bound Phase 1 Extension is supposed to open soon (Spring 2016).
I was just wondering if it is on schedule as I am heading that way soon?
Supposed to go to Harmony Road in Oshawa and a link Toll Hiway 412 down to 401?

Highway looks almost done. Guessing it'll open late May, early June. Tolls won't be activated at first, they begin July 1st I believe.

Noticed a massive amount clear cutting going on around Holt Road and the Courtice exit on the 401. Would this be in preparation for the 418 connector to the 407?

I fall in between your positions...in some circumstances, need a lot more. In other circumstances, they are wasteful both from an economic and a community perspective.

If I were a road planner, I'd put a heavy focus on rural areas - for example, upgrading Highway 17 across northern Ontario (unfortunately, the cost of that is like $30 billion) and Highway 11 from North Bay to Timmins to name two. Many rural sections in southern Ontario also need widening, such as large parts of Highway 401.

In the GTA, there simply is no room for many more, except at the edge of the Greenbelt, where such would be controversial to begin with (although the development and housing cost issue walks into another minefield...).

407 EAST LAKERIDGE ROAD web
The Town of Whitby is inviting pedestrians, cyclists and rollerbladers to come check out the 407 before it opens. The town got approval from the Ministry of Transportation to host an event on the morning of Saturday, June 18th to allow people on foot and bikes make use of the fresh pavement. They say residents can walk, run or wheel on the 1.5 kilometre section of the 407 between Baldwin Street and Anderson Street.

It runs from 9:00am to 12:00pm on Saturday June 18th.

Driving/parking: There is no parking available at the event site. Parking is available at Luther Vipond Memorial Arena (67 Winchester Road East) and in the municipal parking lot at 3 Vipond Road.

Shuttle Busses: Free shuttle busses will pick-up and drop-off residents at the parking sites (Luther Vipond Memorial Arena and the municipal parking lot at 3 Vipond Road) and Highway 407.

Walking, running or wheeling: Residents can walk or wheel to the site and access the 407 from the south-east corner of Roybrook Avenue and Baldwin Street South.

Motorized scooters for persons with accessibility requirements are welcome.

^ Based on that, I'm predicting June 19th as opening date.

That's all in the town of Brooklin it would seem. Is that segment part of the first phase opening? That is to the east of the Hwy 412 connection, no?

First Section of New Highway 407 Set to Open
Ontario Creating Jobs, Building a Strong Econmy
June 17, 2016 1:00 P.M.Ministry of Transportation
Today, Ontario announced that the first section of the new Highway 407 in Durham Region will be open to traffic for morning commuters on Monday, June 20, helping to manage congestion and supporting economic growth in the region.

The highway will be open from Brock Road in Pickering to Harmony Road in Oshawa. Highway 412, which connects Highway 407 and Highway 401, will also open. There will be a toll-free period on the new Highways 407 and 412 until the new year, allowing drivers to travel on these roads free of charge. Following that, tolls will be in place.

The second and final construction phase will include extending Highway 407 from Harmony Road to Highway 35/115, and Highway 418 connecting Highway 407 to Highway 401. This final section will be built by 2020, with an interim opening from Harmony Road to Taunton Road at Highway 418 by late 2017.

The Highway 407 East Project is part of the largest infrastructure investment in Ontario's history -- about $160 billion over 12 years, which is supporting 110,000 jobs every year across the province, with projects such as roads, bridges, transit systems, schools and hospitals. In 2015, the province announced support for more than 325 projects that will keep people and goods moving, connect communities and improve quality of life.

Improving highway infrastructure is part of the government's economic plan to build Ontario up and deliver on its number-one priority to grow the economy and create jobs. The four-part plan includes investing in talent and skills, including helping more people get and create the jobs of the future by expanding access to high-quality college and university education. The plan is making the largest investment in public infrastructure in Ontario's history and investing in a low-carbon economy driven by innovative, high-growth, export-oriented businesses. The plan is also helping working Ontarians achieve a more secure retirement.

Quick Facts
Highways 407 and 412 are publicly owned tolled highways. The province is responsible for setting and regulating the tolls, which will not be higher than tolls on Highway 407 ETR. The province will establish customer service standards and retain the toll revenue.
Tolls and fees will remain in effect for the existing privately operated 407 ETR west of Brock Road.
Motorists who drive on Highways 407 ETR, 407, and 412 will use one transponder and receive one invoice making the tolling process seamless.
