With all of these good numbers you'd think there would be some new airlines for Austin at the least existing airlines adding new routes. The Asian route hasn't been mentioned for a while.

Could it be that there just isn't enough current gate space to add much more? Once the south "terminal" opens it should alleviate a little but it's going to be temporary.

Thanks for the info - I didn't look hard enough through the forum pages I guess.

How long do you think construction will take on the stinger gate?

Side Note - FARE is now on the approved list at ABIA, so you now have that option for airport TNC pickup.

South Terminal

The maintenance ramp has been remarked as well to accommodate parking for the South Terminal. There are 3 parking stands that can accommodate 3 757's simultaneously. Heard renovation should start hopefully in June.
Great update! Thank you.

Any word on the total number of new gates to be constructed? There was some talk not to long ago about the possibility that the airport was considering adding a few more to the overall expansion.

Silly question, but what's a 'stinger gate'?

Here's a schematic of a stinger gate being built (already built?) at DFW:

That's litterally like a terminal wing in itself. The one in DFW has a lot more than 4 gates. They should make ours like DFWs!

Ladies and gentlemen, the stinger gate off of Gate 4 is temporary. Used to lessen the overall impact of expansion construction. No need to discuss how it looks, how big it is, etc.

I'm much more curious as to how the real expansion is going to look and how many total (new) gates it will have. So far, the preliminary renderings look very promising.

No. Not really. As the name implies, it is more of a "stinger" than an entire appendage (i.e., it's a finger not a hand...it's more like a primary feather than an entire wing).

It will be interesting to see how much square footage is going to be made for passenger holding areas. Stingers are not very big (in most cases) and from what has been reported, this stinger will house the BA and Condor flights while construction is underway on the expansion (even though those flights do not overlap one another).

Oh my bad lol, I thought it was a permanent feature. Didn't think about it as a way to keep current gates open while the terminal is expanded. I see what you mean now.

Anyone know what the construction projects are on either side of of the middle security checkpoint? They've drywalled off a significant area.

Figured it out. They're widening the terminal exits.

Darn. Guess they decided not to enlarge the expansion by a few more gates.

Oh well.

When considering the South ("Budget") Terminal, the total number of "new" gates seems to be 12 (9 in the main terminal and 3 at the South Terminal).
