I also notice that they seemed to have added some height to Place Ville-Marie.

Neat find. I also notice what seems to be quite a big and tall development around the Jacques-Cartier bridge and a skittishly small development adjacent to the courts Windsor.

OR we could add a 150 meter spire and BAM it's the "tallest" building in Canada!

PVM would look better with 10-15 more stories. It is a bit too squat (wide) for its size.

Hope baseball can come back, but isn't that a bit too close to the water? Going to be cold and damp in April-May and Sept-Oct, that close to the water.

Melbourne? Yes, I would agree. I visited this summer, and the construction volume was mind-boggling.

^ Yeah, but a lot of people forget in North America about places like Melbourne. I know the city is booming like crazy, but would you say it was comparable to Toronto when you visited?

According to the data base, Melbourne currently only has 20 hi-rises under construction vs. 152 for Toronto. Sydney has 17.

^ I find that hard to believe. Much like the insane booms in Chinese cities right now, I'm guessing the construction is being under-reported on a North American forum such as ours.

While I know Melbourne has a lot on the go, I do struggle to believe they have the volumes of Toronto. even on SSC where Australia has a large presence, it doesn't have that many.

I would more call this an Anglophone forum rather than North American. There's way more Americans than Australians, so they'll be better represented and then us Canadians seem to always be overrepresented on the internet.

Melbourne has 17 under construction on Emporis. I don't know if he is still active but Emporis' Melbourne editor is a city planner with huge post counts at SSC.

docklands alone had at least 17 buildings under construction. I can't speak to the actual volume for the city as a whole, but it is very extensive, perhaps a bit behind Toronto, but not by much. Probably more than any other city on the continent, save Toronto and NYC. Melbourne is growing faster than Sydney in absolute numbers. Close to 100K per year.

Quote:
Melbourne's population is swelling by 2 per cent a year, adding more than 900,000 people since this century began - and putting it on track to be a city of 8 million people by 2050.

The Bureau of Statistics estimates that in mid-2012, the city's population was about to hit 4.25 million, after six boom years in which it grew by almost half a million.

Recent bureau figures imply that Melbourne today is home to 4.35 million people - and 27 per cent bigger than the city it was at the start of 2000.

If growth continues at that rate, Melbourne's population would pass 5 million by 2025, overtake Sydney by 2037, and reach 8 million by 2049.

Emporis has been total garbage for years. the undercount of Chinese skyscraper construction (and completed) is just embarrassing.

A bit behind Toronto would be an insane amount of skyline growth considering Melbourne has about 1/5 of Toronto's tally for built highrises. 30 to 40 towers under construction would give the impression of Toronto.

I wonder if Toronto will get below 100 under construction as sales fall. We've been at this high rate of construction for a while now, and even while sales slow the number has remained steady. Next year might be a good time to gauge the total number under construction and then do a comparison to Melbourne at that time. They may have well passed Toronto, by then.
