Wishful thinking

Is there any chance she may get back some of her chopped off 200 feet. Or did we go pass a point of no return?

I doubt it. I think this is set in stone. To change otherwise would be to much of a hassle for a project that has taken so long to finally rise like the phoenix it is.

No - to go back to the drawing board at this point would require both a zoning and design change, a process that would take at least a year and cost a lot of money. The height is not changing.

Excavation Begins at 53 West 53rd Street, former Tower Verre

53 West 53rd Street, photo by Tectonic

Quote:
Amidst the trials of Amanda Burden, the recession and the American Folk Art Museum controversy, 53 West 53rd Street has been a long time coming. Finally, dirt is now moving, and excavation for the Jean Nouvel-designed supertall is underway, as visible in the above photo, sent in by Tectonic.

The finished product will stand 1,050 feet tall – which would have, back when it was approved, made it the tallest residential building in Manhattan. It was originally slated to be 200 feet taller, but in an arbitrary decision that seems even more absurd today given the rise of even taller as-of-right towers on 57th Street, the “Torre Verre” was beheaded by Amanda Burden’s Department of City Planning.

Hines is developing the skyscraper, which will house an expansion for the Museum of Modern Art inside its lower floors. The Torre Verre moniker has been dropped as the development has moved closer to the marketing phase, with 53 West 53rd Street now favored instead.

Building permits for construction were filed back in July, and per The Real Deal, there will be 140 apartments. Fifty-third Street is emerging as a premium street for luxury condominiums, and a penthouse at the Baccarat Tower, at 20 West 53rd Street, is currently listed for $60 million.

53 West 53rd Street is expected to be finished sometime in 2017.

Lots of drilling on site as of November 5th - the southern side of the lot was about 15 feet beneath street level.

I guess that's the 200 ft taken off the top? :-/

Sorry to be repetitive, but a side-by-side is always nice.

And the design "bulked up" slightly, but it's still a beautiful tower.

Everytime I'm reminded of the 200ft cut-off, my skyscraper heart hurts. I know the whole story behind it, but still,l I just can't let go. TWO HUNDRED FEET!! Too painful. Instead of a future icon, we'll get a filler. Beaufitul? Yes. Incredible? Yes. But still a filler.

If this was standing right now it would be the 5th tallest in the city. That is what you call a filler?

Way to go personal, I like.

Yes, but Tower Verre will be completed in 4 to 5 years. By then it will be barely noticeable*. The top is pretty thin so it won't make much of a dent on the skyline. Midtown is just too massive, it literally absorbs 500 - 900 footers.

*12th tallest building in the city by 2018.

Maybe I exaggerated a bit with "filler", but in general TV won't make a big impact. Especially when viewed from Central Park, it will be barely visible because of the 57th street behemoths.
