ABC Demo - Nov 2014

this is facing away from the work site, nicely laid for display to the "crowd" for the Rees house move.

Demolition on the hotel block is complete (still some cleanup left). Over on the arena block, the parking structure is about 75% demolished but it doesn't look like they've touched it in a while. However, demolition of the building on the northwest corner of the block is moving along and the Lakeside Bank lot is fenced off and it appears demolition is imminent. That's a bit surprising since the replacement Lakeside Bank structure up at Michigan and 14th is not done - although the exterior is nearly finished and it does look nice.

Demo is complete, the ABC building is under abatement. The actual project and new construction is still being developed and detailed by the design/build team, so it will still be several months before there is any major movement on the site.

Is this one still on-track to begin construction in July? (or has it been pushed back to later summer??)

I've heard it starts in a matter of weeks. So, yes. They're just dealing with some tricky excavation at the moment.

From the southwest corner it will look identical to the last round of renderings, only shorter. The rooms displaced from the top have been relocated to the center of the block in a new wing, making the building shaped like an L.

Note by shorter, I mean than the original proposal. The project is still the 40 floors listed in the title of this thread. Final height to be a little over 440'

Excavators have been on-site off and on over the past couple of weeks, digging holes and then filling them back in.

There's some heavy equipment on site. I didn't see any cassion rigs, but there is a giant mobile crane (the kind that needs a separate trailer behind it to carry to boom) on site as of last night. Wonder if that is going to be used to assemble the crawler cranes for cassion rigs? Seems like overkill though, it was an awfully large crane. We'll just have to wait and see what it is for.

Pretty sure it's for this, but there was a new construction building permit issued on Wednesday for a 40 story hotel at 2121 S Prairie (intersection w/Cermak) for the caissons and sheeting.

Yup, that's this building. That crane I saw must be for setting up the rigs.

Spyguy, any updated rendering for this? Like, a final final rendering, reflecting the lower height?

Just noticed when viewing the hotel and stadium site around Cermak that Google updated their aerial photos. It's shows all the sites totally cleared.

The images were taken in late April. You can tell because the NFL draft is happening in grant park.

Arena Start Too?

Just wondering if arena caissons are about to start as well, or is that to lag behind by a month or two??

(Also, just to ask here as the site is almost next door - what about the McHugh hotel - anybody here any news, expected timing, etc on that one?)

Just heard some noise on the McHugh project recently. It will have up to 3 different flags. It is moving forward slowly but surely.

In addition to the large crane, there are now two caisson drilling rigs and a small amount of other equipment on site.
