Where were you when you took this gorgeous photo? What is the illuminated green tower to the far left of the skyscrapers? Could it be City Hall?

Yes, the green tower is City Hall, the lower portion that you can just see a bit of is red. I took that from the baseball fields on the old portion of Scholl Canyon landfill, it's up Glenoaks in Glendale. I just got back from there this evening.

As you can see there are actually two decals. (I accidentally cropped one off in the larger pic.)
That says Gilmore(top) and Gasoline (bottom). No doubt a version of this logo for Gilmore Blu-Green Gasoline, with a lion in the center:

There's some additional sticker area under the circle, which probably has some more text but it's far too small to read.

Happy Christmas to everyone on NLA.

I had planned to post a seasonal picture, but Photobucket's completely inaccessible at the moment, so I'll have to wait until I'm able to log in again (probably sometime in March at the rate their maintenance team is working!).

Merry Christmas, 1928 Style

Apologies if this has been seen here before. It didn't turn up in a quick search. On tumblr it is titled "Christmas Lights in Downtown Los Angeles, 1928"

Hey Hoss, I look forward to your seasonal post.

My connection with Photobucket has come to a final denouement.

Season's greetings/Merry Xmas to all.

I looked at the first picture, and the address is

_________E SUPER SERVICE
_________AST SLAUSON AVE.

...which would rule out e_r's suggestion of View Heights Super Service on W Slauson.

The 1946 Huntington Park CD has:

ancestry.com

and not too far from this is:

ancestry.com

Odd that a chop suey restaurant would merit its own heading in a city directory. Slauson goes further east to Whittier but I didn't find anything else of interest.

Better late than never...

Illuminated Christmas tree in front of the Petroleum Securities Building, December 26, 1928.

USC Digital Library

The aerial below was taken almost exactly three years later, but still shows the space between the building and the sidewalk where the tree stood. This space was lost when the streets were widened/realigned.

If I didn't have so many pictures there, I'd have moved hosts long ago. To be fair, this is the first outage I remember since the site was taken over, but it's lasted over a week!

Good eye, Godzilla!

A mystery location.

"Original Slide 1977 LOS ANGELES COMMUNICATIONS CENTER, MOTORCYCLES"

eBay

So is this the command center for CHiPs?

Hoss is an expert on the TV show CHiPs so I'm hoping he'll recognize this place.

Although they used the real CHP building (now replaced) at 777 W Washington Boulevard in 'CHiPs', I don't recognize this location. The current CHP Communications Center is at 2901 W Broadway, and that's not the building in the photo either.

Lwize, I am not sure if your idea of old school Chinese food is the same as mine, but when I want old-school Chinese food, I head to Won Kok in Chinatown. Their food is exactly like the Chinese food my parents used to bring home in the 1970s. They serve all of the old American-Chinese classics that you can't find anywhere else anymore, such as Egg Foo Yung.

I describe this place to my friends by saying “ever seen a 1970s movie where the cops are staked out and they're eating Chinese food from a cardboard carton? This is the food they're eating.”

Your mileage may vary, but to my taste buds at least, this stuff is identical to the Chinese food you used to get “back in the day”. And I took my mom to Won Kok before she died, and she fully agreed with my assessment.

This building looks like the Motorcycle Escort command center for funerals.

Hoss, perhaps Lipson & Bogard was located on La Cienega Blvd. and not Washington Blvd.

GSV

There are three vintage buildings similar in size in that direction.

A closer look at Lipson & Bogard.

Ballona Creek is over there too. If you look closely at the eBay photo there is a fence to prevent people from falling in the creek. (if my theory is correct)

A similar fence is there today.

Thanks for your help, ProphetM & Lorendoc....I really appreciate it.

Your theory is intriguing, Lorendoc. I think you're on something.

I want to say this place was in Anaheim on Magnolia south of La Palma. As a teenager in the 70's, I joined the CB craze and got one installed in my 1965 Biscayne. As I recall, the store looked a lot like this.

A pretty good theory, I would say all in all e_r.

From a 1958 permit for 2766 S. La Cienega Blvd.

I think you're right, e_r. The space I took to be the intersection is more likely to be the bridge over the creek. The building you highlighted at 2766 S La Cienega has a build date of 1949, but there's a smaller structure at roughly the same location on this March 4, 1941 aerial. Davis Bros' original workshop is just below the center. There's also a 1951 view available, but the resolution isn't nearly as good.
