- What the Truck?! is parking itself at Borden Park (7507 Borden Park Rd.) on Aug. 16 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. There will be nine trucks in the fleet, four of which are new. They are Canicus Catering, a converted fire truck with a pizza oven; Dolce & Banana, which took over The Lingnan’s truck and serves up paninis and gelato; Native Delights, known for bannock burgers; and One Cool Cookie, which produces fresh-baked cookies right in its trailer. Go to whatthetruck.ca for more details.

- Gold Medal Plates award-winning chef Nathin Bye has a name for his new restaurant that will replace Murrieta’s at 10612 Whyte Ave. It’s Ampersand27 and Bye expects it to open this fall. You can keep track of the restaurant’s progress by visiting its Facebook page.

Bodega (Sabor Divino) tapas bar for snacks last night, simply delicious.

Had the ham and cheese press, could have ate 10 of them.

My favourite ethnic grocery in the city is adding a 2nd location

The Paraiso Tropical on 118th ave is opening a shop on 104st, just south of Strathcona High School. Glad that their success on the Ave is allowing them to expand

Whyte Avenue closure pitched for late-night
http://metronews.ca/news/edmonton/11...or-late-night/

Quote:
The city is looking to block off parts of Whyte Avenue to vehicle traffic as part of a new pilot project set to launch this fall.

They’re calling it ‘Car-free Whyte Avenue,’ with officials proposing a barricade setup along Whyte Avenue from 102 Street to 107 Street Friday or Saturday late-night as a means to control traffic on the busy strip starting in late-October.

“We know that Whyte Avenue is busy on Friday and Saturday nights. There’s about 10,000 licensed seats and the combination of those seats and the fact that it’s a real vibrant hospitality destination means there can be more people out late on Whyte Avenue on a Friday and Saturday night than there is on Saturday’s Farmer’s Market,” said Angela Turner, program manager at Responsible Hospitality Edmonton.

Business owners say costs, uncertainty sideline boardwalk-style patios on Whyte Avenue
http://metronews.ca/news/edmonton/11...-whyte-avenue/

Quote:
Business owners in Old Strathcona blame the price tag and construction timeline for not having more boardwalk-style patios on Whyte Avenue this summer.

The city approved a handful of businesses for the new boardwalk-style patios in addition to Julio’s Barrio—who have the new type of patio installed—but many business owners couldn’t justify spending upwards of $25,000 to have the patios installed for just a few months.

“We were trying to get this taken care of in the spring but we weren’t allowed to advance anything until later June. Even if we were able to move ahead, there was such little time to use the patio, build the patio and promote the business with the whole idea,” said Tyson Boyd, co-owner of Tavern on Whyte.

Restaurants and bars approved for the pilot project got a five-year approval for the patios, but only a one-year permit for the special boardwalks, another deterrent for many of the businesses approved.

“It didn’t make sense for me to pay $25,000 to get a boardwalk made that I cannot get guaranteed that I would be able to have next year,” said Saylish Haas, co-owner of Meat and Next Act Pub.

Dry rubbed local ‘Four Whistle Farm’ chicken.
Served as a whole, half or quarter chicken.

ROSTI-PUERCO

Local ‘Four Whistle Farm’ “Rollo de Puerco”.
Slow roasted & sliced to order."

includes potato and tortilla sides.

^on the face of it seems a bit high yes, but...

6 of us:

2 platters for 2 $110

1 x 1/2 chicken
1 x 1/2 pork

+Fruoles charros
+Saltedos verdes
+roasted cauliflower

included roasted potatoes, chips, salsa

$50 a head all in, just enough food, and included 6 DELICIOUS cocktails.

-----

Sides were all tasty, but nothing stood out.

Pork was flavourful, a bit more moisture is how I like it.

Chicken was bang on and some of the tastiest I have ever had.

Cocktails fantastic and flavour combinations I have never experienced.

Service attentive, funny, knowledgable.

I would not go here regularly, but for a simple tasty dinner for a group of 4-8 people it was a great choice.
