Because PCL is using tried and true firms on this project I think it will go pretty fast. I know some of the guys on the mechanical side and they are very good at large technically challenging projects.

okay... but i would also hope that - even on a single project - you strive to create and maintain productive relationships even with those you consider to be interchangeable trades. because one day one of those interchangeable trades or tradespersons will be in a key trade position on another project.

^ This is absolutely true. Go to a site or office and treat an inexperienced hand like a joe boy. 5-10 years later when this guy or girl is running an office. You will be out of a contract! Treat everyone with respect even if you don't agree with their perspective. Your bank account will love u!!!!

One of the first things they teach you in business school: relationships with your customers and suppliers are very important to maintain, no ifs, ands or buts.

The number one gripe I have as a tin basher is the complete lack of feedback we get. Keep in mind that I work in a shop, not on the field.

As for dampers, last year I had to build a bunch of dampers in various sizes that required 10 gauge angles. Why would a 6 x 6 damper need 10 gauge galv angles? The standard size for angles are 16 gauge. I still gave what they wanted...

If you guys are pissed off at us then you need to tell us about it.

My final comment. You guys bitched about PCL about not being difficult to work with as a sub contractor. Despite this PCL, is extremely successful and has no shortages of clients to work for and subcontractors lining up to bid with them on projects. I indicate that this is sometimes the reality of construction and yet, I'm the guy who doesn't have a grasp of the industry? I beg to differ.

^ Sorry SHO, you're outgunned on this one.. and yes, you don't seem to have a solid grasp of how relationships work within the industry.

maybe moving dirt is different, but constructing buildings requires solid relationships with subcontractors and suppliers

For me it's the field guys. They knock dampers in backwards, they torque them so that they won't operate smoothly.. that kind of stuff.

To quote a poster from another thread... how did the Arena thread become a trades and contractors therapy session? Maybe a new thread necessary? Glad you guys are talking about it but not all of us are in the trade!

My problem with the Tinnies is the front end not so much the field guys. When I was a TAB specialist I was always hammered for to high of price. But when I got to look at some of the prices submitted I was floored by the same bastards doubling or tripling my price on the quote. I stopped bidding to those guys and mainly went to the MCs.

That said a good site foreman makes all the difference with some of the firms I have to deal with now.

But now we are working with so many out of province subs that think they can give us shoddy work and get away with it.

I am now the biggest asshole to Sheet-metal and Balancing contractors.

The Arena has good people on it and since I am not doing the work on this project I can't bitch about it.

Maybe mister moderator we can have a separate thread for WTF images and or general construction issues since I believe the Ed construction deals more with proposals and the bitching that goes with it.

Indeed. I had the pleasure of being on a site with one of the best site guys I have ever worked with, on a project with S.O.D. down in Red Deer several years ago. Mde the job go so well it was a beautiful thing.

Arpi's is a good MC. Did a tonne with the south guys at Foothills years ago. I was hoping that Priority would get a crack at it though... best in the city IMO

Edmonton Shoptalk

In this thread we talk shop with no construction or development updates to interrupt us. Just talk about the construction and development industry.

When they were just Keller, I had no issues with them. But what I have been finding lately is the issue has more to do with the PMs and not so much the firm. Also the number of people in those positions that have no experience building any thing.

Duly noted.. thanks

On another topic, I was discussing a project with my environmental consultant just recently, and discussing ACM, he indicated that now friable ACM insulation is being found in buildings built up to 1992! Something to keep in mind

Shop talk!

Anyone out there have any experience buying, selling, spec'ing or operating ultrasonic humidifiers ?

I want to get rid of my spray washers but don't want to go with steam generators for energy efficiency and maintenance reasons, and any media type systems are big, expensive and will drive the static pressure in my plenums through the roof.

I have a guy coming in for show & tell next week, but just curious if anyone here has played with one
