Making International Shipping Green

Maersk inks deal to secure supply of ‘green’ e-methanol for vessel, targets 2023 launch
August 19, 2021
CNBC Excerpt

Maersk said it has secured a supply of “green” e-methanol for what it described as “the world’s first container vessel operating on carbon neutral fuel.”

In an announcement Thursday, the world’s largest container shipping firm said Denmark’s European Energy and its subsidiary, REintegrate, would set up a facility to produce carbon neutral e-methanol for use in a vessel designed to operate on it.

The plant would then produce approximately 10,000 metric tons of e-methanol used by Maersk’s ship every year. The e-methanol will be made using renewable energy and biogenic carbon dioxide, with production of the fuel for Maersk slated to begin in 2023. The United States Environmental Protection Agency describes biogenic emission sources as “emissions that come from natural sources.”

World's first crewless, zero emissions cargo ship will set sail in Norway
CNN Excerpt
August 27, 2021

A Norwegian company has created what it calls the world's first zero-emission, autonomous cargo ship.

If all goes to plan, the ship will make its first journey between two Norwegian towns before the end of the year, with no crew onboard. Instead, its movements will be monitored from three onshore data control centers.

It's not the first autonomous ship -- an autonomous ferry launched in Finland in 2018 -- but it is the first fully electric container ship, say its makers. Developed by chemical company Yara International, the Yara Birkeland was designed to reduce emissions of nitrogen oxides, which are toxic pollutants and greenhouse gases, and carbon dioxide, as well as moving freight away from roads to the sea.

The shipping industry currently accounts for between 2.5% and 3% of global greenhouse gases emissions, according to the International Maritime Organization.

Nearly all of Norway's electricity is generated by hydroelectric power, which is generally considered to have much lower carbon emissions than burning fossil fuels, although it still produces greenhouse gases.

I think you will eventually see all cargo, freight, long haul trucking, airplanes, ferries, and long distance passenger rail convert to hydrogen as the price continues to fall, availability increases, and the infrastructure begins to form in a substantial way.

Standard battery power for such uses are simply not optional and won't be for MANY decades to come.

I agree with you on Hydrogen. Just look at how the Japanese auto makers keep pouring money into it's development(Honda is letting GM build their electric cars for them, that should tell you something). Battery powered electric until they come up with a BETTER non Lithium battery is not the answer. Watch how fast governments back track on their deadlines when that becomes clear to them, finally.

Sure Lithium is in all the oceans, but extracting it is the problem. Tiny amounts in ocean water.

Make and grow more things domestically. Problem solved.

Daewoo Shipbuilding develops carbon dioxide storage technology
Excerpt

SEOUL, Sept. 16 (Yonhap) -- Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. (DSME) said Thursday it has developed a technology to store carbon dioxide captured in ship engine emissions.

The technology developed in cooperation with a local ship part supplier, HI AIR Korea Co., will help ships in operation reduce their carbon dioxide emissions to brace for environment regulations by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), DSME said.

The IMO aims to cut carbon dioxide emissions from international shipping by more than 30 percent by 2025 and by at least 50 percent by 2050, compared with 2008.
