20 years ago, Shenzhen was an unsafe and sleazy place where Hong Kongers go for knock-off shopping, find a 2nd wife, and go for a dirty massage. Reports came back of kidnappings, druggings with organs sliced out for re-sale, and more. Then the food scandals came with sewer oil used in hotpots.

Shenzhen's economic transformation has completely changed how we see our neighbour today. Now, it's a more upmarket food and fun destination with many new spacious malls and great meals at a fraction of the price vs Hong Kong. It has become a very popular weekend day trip, especially among the suburban residents that live closer to Shenzhen than Kowloon.

The new Shenzhen Museum of Art opened in November 2023 north of the city centre in Longhua district. Just a short walk from Hongshan metro station, 1 stop away from Shenzhen North high-speed train station, the museum building has an exhibition area of 20,000 square metres across its 18 halls.

Ms. Shiota Chiharu's interpretation of life, death, and existence was first installed in Tokyo in 2019, with Shenzhen being the 6th stop on its tour. It intends to express the intangible : memories, anexiety, dreams, and more. On show are large installations of red and black threads for "The Soul Trembles".

The Nanshan Museum in the west side of town has a decent collection of historic artifacts and also special exhibitions. Getting a ticket is tricky as you need to reserve a free one on WeChat, and it doesn't seem to work with foreign phone numbers and it requires your verified ID.

The museum also has an exhibition outlining the area's traditional industries and development, which includes oyster farming and fishing.

The Three Express Trains Museum was completed in early 2024 alongside the high-speed train tracks with a few historic rail carriages on display as well as an indoor exhibition area. It's nowhere as structured and amazing as the train museum in Beijing but there are a few interesting vehicles that are worth a short stop.

The 3 trains refer to 751, 753, and 755, which were used to ship fresh food to Hong Kong via Shenzhen since 1962. At its peak, some 5000 livestock and tens of thousands of chickens passed by this area daily. Service ended in 2010 as other forms of transportation became more accessible.
