Portrait Arts was at 6061 West Third-- built after a permit was taken out on Aug 23, 1946--a second story of some description was added a few years later. No "demo" permit listed, so maybe it's under what appears at the address now...

Robert Barry seems to have been the son of the contractor, David Barry Jr.

Thanks, GW. That was one of the possible locations I considered, but when I saw the current building at 6061 W 3rd Street (below), I discounted it.

Here's a 1948 aerial view of 6061 W 3rd Street which shows the original shape.

The 1956 CD lists the occupants as Colorvision Inc.

'mystery' parking lot.

eBay

I thought I might have posted this before, but I don't remember the restrooms (see below).

detail

Do you suppose the parking spaces under the canopy are for the dept. store executives?

below: Here's the earlier photograph I was thinking of. (I posted this in Jan. 2015)

I hope the sale did go through before the crash--oh wait, that would have been a disaster for the buyer.

$5000 down seems awfully high for the time; I wonder what a house like this typically sold for in mid-1929?

I agree. I can't imagine this house is worth more than 10K at the time.
Mansions in Beverly Hills were going for around $40,000 in 1929.

Mortgages were different back then. It was usually 50% down and maybe a 5 year mortgage.

The new building permits for 323 N Citrus Avenue are dated August 11, 1925. The house cost $7,000, while the garage was $500.

"Bet[ween] Halstead Ave. & Beverly Blvd."

Amount may have been the remaining balance of a first mortgage with owner willing to take a second. Could also be an inflated amount to discourage unqualified buyers.

I don't believe we've seen this slide of the old Van De Kamp's location on Wilshire. ( you can still see the 'windmill' minus the blades)

[1980s?]

eBay

[ca.1950] -with the blades (that actually turned) as seen from the opposite direction.

Here's the older station you see in the lower left corner in the above (previous post) black & white.

In January, E_R posted a series of photos of LBJ in Los Angeles.
Here is one of them.

FYI: There were several follow up posts with other pictures and news articles.
The photo above has Pierre Salinger (behind LBJ facing the camera) who ran for Senator from California that year.
He lost, but he did go on to play the Joker and Catwoman's lawyer, Lucky Pierre, on Batman.

I found this amusing photo of Salinger, with a microphone, and LBJ (tired of hearing him talk?) from that same year.

I can't decipher if it was taken in Los Angeles or not, can anyone else?

P.S.: What is on that man's head that's partially visible by LBJ's crotch?
Confetti? Glare? A bad case of dandruff?

I could only find a picture of the corner of this building when I was nearing the end of my Citizen's National Bank round-up in post #20876. Here's a much better view showing the front of the Stiles Oliver Clements designed Wilshire-Curson branch at 5780 Wilshire Boulevard. It could even be in the background of the Wilshire/Chinese Palace picture e_r posted above. This is "Job 231: Stiles Oliver Clements, Citizens National Bank (Los Angeles, Calif.), 1948".

I've enlarged this detail view of the entrance to show the reflection of the Prudential Building across the street. The Prudential Building was only completed in 1948, so it's possible that it was still under construction when this photo was taken.

Getty Research Institute

This is the 1947 new building permit for the bank.

Online Building Records

The demo permits are dated 1985. It seems very sad that this building lasted less than 40 years. I'm sure it would probably still be standing if it were in a slightly less sought-after location. Here's the building you'll find on the site today. Note that the old Prudential Building can still be seen in the reflections.

No amputation necessary NCD. I know a little old man on Olvera street who can magically transform size 9 into your size 13 shoes.

I love this kind of personal snapshot of tourists in Hollywood. I first noticed the photo because of the top of the Chinese Theatre on the right.

http://www.flickriver.com/photos/ele...rk/3696231634/

The source has it dated: Hollywood! 1956 and includes this evocative caption:

A couple of hip chicks from Illinois strike a pose behind the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel and Grauman's Theater on N. Orange. The mint green 1955 Chevy
210 4-door sedan sets off the girls' red and blue slacks, and you almost miss the zig-zag alteration on miss blue-pants. She looks like trouble...

http://www.flickriver.com/photos/bod...ey/3933134273/

A man named David "Bodie" Bailey has posted photos of places in and around Los Angeles that he describes thusly:

This is the type of photography my Grandfather Frank took while he was working for Pacific Greyhound. He would follow buses, look for safety problems,
accidents, repair or damage. The photographs are many and the information is thin.

"Melody Lane" on center right building.

To save NLA sleuths some time, though, a commenter (Joe) on his site noted:

That's definitely Long Beach. The P.E. car is turning from Long Beach Boulevard onto Ocean Avenue. Beyond it you can see the hazy outline
of the Long Beach Municipal Auditorium, a building of distinctive shape. Every building in this photo is gone.
