Portrait Arts was at 6061 West Third-- built after a permit was taken out on Aug 23, 1946--a second story of some description was added a few years later. No "demo" permit listed, so maybe it's under what appears at the address now...


Robert Barry seems to have been the son of the contractor, David Barry Jr.

I agree. I can't imagine this house is worth more than 10K at the time.
Mansions in Beverly Hills were going for around $40,000 in 1929.

Mortgages were different back then. It was usually 50% down and maybe a 5 year mortgage.

The new building permits for 323 N Citrus Avenue are dated August 11, 1925. The house cost $7,000, while the garage was $500.

FYI: There were several follow up posts with other pictures and news articles.
The photo above has Pierre Salinger (behind LBJ facing the camera) who ran for Senator from California that year.
He lost, but he did go on to play the Joker and Catwoman's lawyer, Lucky Pierre, on Batman.

I found this amusing photo of Salinger, with a microphone, and LBJ (tired of hearing him talk?) from that same year.

I could only find a picture of the corner of this building when I was nearing the end of my Citizen's National Bank round-up in post #20876. Here's a much better view showing the front of the Stiles Oliver Clements designed Wilshire-Curson branch at 5780 Wilshire Boulevard. It could even be in the background of the Wilshire/Chinese Palace picture e_r posted above. This is "Job 231: Stiles Oliver Clements, Citizens National Bank (Los Angeles, Calif.), 1948".



I've enlarged this detail view of the entrance to show the reflection of the Prudential Building across the street. The Prudential Building was only completed in 1948, so it's possible that it was still under construction when this photo was taken.

The demo permits are dated 1985. It seems very sad that this building lasted less than 40 years. I'm sure it would probably still be standing if it were in a slightly less sought-after location. Here's the building you'll find on the site today. Note that the old Prudential Building can still be seen in the reflections.
